Yorkshire homes are burgled most, study reveals

Yorkshire and the Humber has been revealed as having the highest burglary rates of regions across England and Wales, in a recently completed survey.

Figures also showed that West Yorkshire is the area that suffers most burglaries nationally, with people living there almost six times more likely to be burgled than residents in Devon and Cornwall.

The least safe cities to live in as regards burglary, are Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield, while the safest cities are Plymouth, Exeter and Truro.

Only North Yorkshire featured in the areas with least residential burglaries, with 6.43 burglaries per 1000 households

Yorkshire and the Humber has an average burglary rate of 15.42 per 1,000 households, followed by the North East, with 13.22 per 1,000 households.

Wales was the lowest region for residential burglaries with an average 8.13 burglaries per 1,000 households followed closely by the South West with 8.46 per 1,000 households.

Across England and Wales, jewellery is the most stolen item, in seven per cent of areas, but in the North East machinery and tools were always the most stolen item, in 22 per cent of areas.

In South Yorkshire, however, burglars are generally after your money.

The survey was collated by The Solar Centre, with police data included.

Brian Davenport, director of The Solar Centre, said: “As autumn draws in we see shorter days of sunlight so it’s important to protect your home. We’re urging people to be cautious when it comes to the safety of their home and security lighting is a powerful deterrent against residential thefts and burglaries.”
