Don’t risk your health on a quick-fix solution to ear wax: Go to the professionals at Charlwood Hearing Care

Excessive ear wax has a quiet way of shrinking life. The volume on the TV is turned up louder, you’ll keep saying ‘sorry - can you repeat that’ and maybe suffer from dizziness and ringing in your ears.
You start to feel disconnected from people, from sounds, from the rhythm of daily life.
Then when the discomfort becomes too much, the urge for a quick fix is strong.
You’ll see a flyer or a social media advert for “fast ear cleaning”.
But this is where the story can take a dangerous turn.
When ear wax is removed by someone without proper medical training, without the right equipment, without the experience to recognise warning signs, the risks are real and serious.
Neil Charlwood, of Scarborough-based Charlwood Hearing Care, stresses that unqualified ear wax removal providers are putting patients at risk.
This is one of the biggest issues in our industry at the moment. Half- day ‘training courses’ are being offered to unqualified non-healthcare professionals with no knowledge or experience of ears, to then be let loose on the public.
In extreme cases, ear wax removal by people who don’t know what they’re doing can lead to:
· Cuts and bleeding
· Infections
· Severe pain
· Perforated eardrums
· Permanent hearing loss
· Worsened blockage when wax is pushed deeper
Ear wax removal isn’t cosmetic, it’s medical
That’s why it’s important to trust your health to qualified, experienced healthcare professionals such as those at Charlwood Hearing Care in Scarborough.
They put patient safety first and can often offer same day or next day appointments.

What happens at your wax removal appointment
There’s a brief discussion about your health and hearing and the Charlwood experts will use a video otoscope to examine the ear canals.
You can then see on screen exactly how much wax there is, and whether treatment is required.
The appointment may take 30-45 minutes depending on the treatment required.
Charlwood Hearing Care uses three different techniques to remove wax - microsuction, irrigation and dry removal.
Microsuction: A safe and effective method for removing wax. A fine tip probe is used to gently hoover out the wax with no water involved.
Irrigation: The use of water to flush out the wax. At Charlwood, a special electronic irrigator regulates the pressure of water used.
Dry removal: An instrument manually removes wax and debris from the ear canal, usually at the entrance of the ear.
Neil says: “Depending on what we find on the day, we may use any one or a combination of all three methods in order to successfully clear the wax.”
We deal with blocked ears in a very safe, clean clinical environment, efficiently and fast. We have over 20 years’ experience in audiology and have been carrying out safe wax removal for over 10 years, on over 5,000 ears!
