A field of 138 runners tackled the Filey Lions Club annual 10k beach race, with York runner Tom Bean and Wakefield teenager Annabel Mason winning the respective titles.

The event had a strong entry of 138 runners with Mason the youngest runner, turning 18-years-old on race day, her birthday proving even more memorable due to her ladies win in 45 minutes 42 seconds.

The oldest runner was Donald Bamforth of Huddersfield aged 76.

Though it threatened to rain, it stayed dry, but the runners had fairly difficult running conditions on this multi-terrain 10k event. When they turned at the halfway mark they had to run all the way back into Filey directly into wind of at least 20mph.

Along with cash prizes, Filey Lions Club awarded a shield to first male and female runner, and a new shield was awarded to the affiliated running club who had the most of their members competing.

Thirty-two running clubs were represented on the day in this event.

Furthest afield were Striders of Croydon, with local clubs represented being Bridlington Road Runners, Scarborough AC and Compass Gym – Scarborough.

The Club Shield was won by Roberttown Road Runners, West Yorkshire, who had an entry of 22 competitors.

Organiser Paul Tyndall said: “It was a lovely event with a great atmosphere, with many competitors encouraged by their family and friends.”

Filey Lions Club wish to say thank you to their event sponsors, Deep Sea Electronics, Bakers Snacks and Filey Tourism Association for their continued support.

The event is run by Lions Club volunteer members and could not run without the support of Scarborough Borough Council who allows the use of the Country Park, and their facilities. Further support is provided by RNLI Beach Lifeguard and Filey Coastguard Rescue officers.
