Beckett League: Staxton keep pace at top

Tom Brough fell agonisingly short of another century, but his innings of 99 paved the way for Forge Valley’s thrilling victory at Flixton 2nds.

Connor Stephenson made 33 and Marley Ward 31 for the hosts in a useful total of 188 all out, Will Tindall grabbing four wickets for Valley.

Stephenson then took 5-60 with ball in hand, but some impressive hitting from Brough, allied to 28 from Charles Tindall, saw the away side to 192-9, as they sneaked home by just one wicket.

Bottom side Mulgrave failed to build on last week’s maiden top flight victory when they were humbled by Cayton.

The strugglers were bundled out with just 47 to their name, Tom Ward helping himself to 5-12.

Harry Holden (27no) then led Cayton to 52-1 in reply as they cruised to a 20-point haul and a comfortable success.

In Division One, Cloughton leapfrogged former leaders Settrington, when they claimed a 79-run success on home soil to go top of the pile.

Jon King (70no) was the cornerstone of a score of 148-6 from the hosts, Callum Ferrie and Jack Hakings both adding 25.

Settrington’s reply never really got going in the face of some superb bowling from Henry Whelan (3-6), Ferrie (3-19) and Paul Milner (3-27) and they were eventually dismissed for just 69.

Half-centuries from Ryan Hargreaves (60) and Matty Pearson (56) steered Staxton 2nds to a 63-run win over rock-bottom Cayton 2nds.

Staxton made their way to 178-6 before reducing their hosts to 115-8.

Brian Heywood struck 27 for Cayton, while Mark Dove returned figures of 4-17 for the victors.

Sherburn eased to a 10-wicket triumph over Wold Newton.

The Woldsmen were sent back to pavilion with a total of just 91 to defend, Mike Holtby taking 4-16 and Jamie Thomson 3-28.

An unbeaten 52 from Craig Sanderson and 30 not out from Lee Jack saw Sherburn to their victory target without the loss of a single wicket.

Thornton Dale moved out of the bottom two when they beat Wykeham by 89 runs.

Tim Hunt top-scored with 72 as Dale posted 183-8, Matthew Vincent the pick of the Wykeham attack with 3-43.

The home side’s run-chase fell well short in the end despite Dan Peel’s 37 and Ezra Pashby hitting 25 in a score of 94 all out, Colin Lockwood claiming 4-21 and Hunt 3-13.

Neil Fletcher (4-12) and Pete Webster (3-25) shared seven wickets as Brompton beat Grindale by seven wickets.

Grindale were bowled out for 82 before Robin Siddle (26no) and Fletcher (22) helped their side to a winning effort of 85-3.
