Bronwen Owen and Emma Clapton cap season with British bronzes

They competed at the final event of British Triathlon Junior and Youth Super Series championship races, which was held at Holme Pierrepont Country Park, which is the home of the National Water Sports Centre.

In the junior and youth section, they both finished as the bronze medallists.

In the final junior race, Bronwen was the third British finisher, and after the swim and bike sections, completed the final five kilometre run in 16 minutes 20 seconds, which was the fastest time of all the competitors.

Emma was also very impressive in the run section, with a time of 8 minutes 48 seconds for the 3.1 kilometre course, which was the second fastest in the race.

In what was a bunch finish, Emma was awarded seventh place, but her performances at previous races, ensured that she retained the overall third spot.

Their performances in the championships and overall, were especially notable in that they were both competing in a higher age group for the first season, which augurs well for 2015.

Both Bronwen and Emma acknowledged the coaching they obtained from Scarborough Swimming Club and coach Sam Greetham, which greatly contributed to their success at triathlon.

After a two-year absence, Scarborough Athletic Club staged a Summer Handicap series of six races.

A total of 61 club members participated in the races, of which the best four results counted, 14 members scoring points in four races, which consisted of road and multi-terrain events over distances of two to just over four miles.

The performances at the races were evaluated to provide the starting order, with the slower runners starting first, leaving the faster runners the task of catching them up.

The overall winner of the summer series was 16-year-old Hannah Mainprize, who notably defied her handicap timings by an ever improving performance.

The runner-up was Julie Clayton, who made a late charge up the scoring table when winning the sixth and final race.

Consistent performances by Kevin Barber earned him third spot overall, edging out Paul Chapman, who was fourth. Chris Wade, Melanie Padgham and Lisa Bourne finished in joint fifth position.

There were no separate awards for the fastest runner this year, but Sue Haslam was notably the fastest at three races.

None of the male runners succeeded at more than at one race.

Three members of Scarborough Athletic Club competed in the latest Sewerby Parkrun.

Ben Metcalfe led the trio home in 23 minutes 22 seconds and was 38th of the 130 finishers.

He was followed by Neil Roberts who, along with his Lurcher, finished 57th after clocking 25.36.

Mick Thompson had to settle for second spot in the over-70 division after clocking 32.25.

Melanie Padgham and Dave Parke took part in the annual Smugglers Trod short course.

This started at Robin Hood’s Bay, up to Maybeck, onto the Flask and Ravenscar Mast, then back to the Bay and to the finish at the top of the steep bank.

They ran together and finished 27th overall of 98 competitors in 3 hours 52 minutes
