All change at Scarborough Cricket Club as new board takes charge

MEMBERS who forced a Special General Meeting at Scarborough Cricket Club have been successful in their efforts to form a new board.

Neil Fletcher, Tim Watts, Darren Barton and Luke Jarvis were elected by strong majorities at Sunday’s meeting, attended by some 60 members at North Marine Road.

A fifth man, Robert Harrison, will be co-opted on to the board at its first meeting on Monday.

Harrison and club president Sir Geoffrey Boycott were suspended by the previous board – the remaining members of which resigned last week – for the alleged receipt and sharing, respectively, of confidential information.

Both men’s suspensions will be lifted, and Boycott given another year as president.

Fletcher fought extensively with his colleagues to force the SGM, which had been unconstitutionally denied to them by the old embattled board. He said that the hard work starts now.

“We’re really pleased with the results and the voting,” said Fletcher, with almost 300 proxy votes on each of the motions.

“There’s a lot of work to do, and we want to get cracking.

“We’ll be talking to Yorkshire on Monday as well about how we can improve and build on the existing relationship.

“There was an awful lot of goodwill in the room, a lot of offers of help, which was really pleasing.”

The SGM was chaired by Robin Smith, the former Yorkshire chair and one of Scarborough’s trustees.

“There are challenges ahead but plenty of goodwill from the membership,” said Smith.

“Let’s hope the club can move forward now with unity and enthusiasm.”
