BECKETT LEAGUE: Champs Staxton thump Heslerton

Premier division champions Staxton made a superb start to their defence of the title with a 161-run home win against a new-look Heslerton.

Skipper Nick Gibson and Jodie Robson hammered 71 apiece as Staxton posted 265-4, James Armstrong also making a superb start to the season with 61 while Dan Bulman added 26, new Heslerton skipper Adam Spaven taking 3-68.

Elliot Cooper’s 5-25 helped dismiss Heslerton for 104 runs, Sam Triffitt top-scoring with 34.

Scalby made the ideal start to life in the premier division, cruising to an 85-run at home to Filey.

Skipper Adam Waugh led by example with a cracking 72, while David Holborn, 56, and Brad Walker, 49, also helped the hosts to 234-9, Jamie Gilbank and Jordan Gregory taking three wickets apiece.

Paul Bowes, 46, and Andy Burrell, 33, gave Filey hope but they sank to 149 all out thanks to canny bowling from Paul Hesp, 4-29, and Mike Buttery, 3-49.

Aussie recruit Nick Strangio had a dream debut for Cayton, smashing an unbeaten 89 as the hosts won by five wickets at home to Staithes.

Rhys Crowe also hit a vital 47 as Cayton surpasses Staithes’ 195-8, with Rich Ward, 56, and Simon Bowes, 46, having shone with the bat for Staithes.

Forge Valley stalwart Mick Glew struck a brilliant unbeaten 112 as his team won by 77 runs at home to Flixton 2nds.

Will Tindall weighed in with a cracking 74 as Valley posted 263-6, M Drury taking 4-44 for Flixton.

Liam Lowery then fell just four runs short of a century, Drury adding 39, but Jaymaine White’s 4-46 limited them to 186-8.

Ebberston batsman James Mason led his team to a 44-run victory at home to Nawton Grange, despite a fine all-round display from Nick Thornicroft.

The former Yorkshire bowler took 3-42 as Ebberston posted 164-7, Ady Turnbull supporting Mason with 28.

Thornicroft then struck 45 in reply but his side were skittled for 120 by top bowling from Rhys Milner, 4-20, and Joe Dunnett, 3-14.

Sherburn batsman Craig Sanderson smashed a superb 110 as his team won by 13 runs in division A at Mulgrave.

Mike Spagnuolo took 5-60 on his Mulgrave debut, but, despite 38 from Andy Cass, the hosts fell short with 189-8.

Gregg Chdwick hammered 124 as Seamer won by 105 runs at home to Wykeham.

Gareth Barnard took 4-34 as Wykeham dismissed the hosts for 243, but the visitors then slumped to 138 all out, Steve Clegg the top Wykeham batsman with 46.

Paul Greenhough, 4-31, and Sam Park, 3-28, shone with the ball for Seamer.

Fine knocks from Mark Bruce, 70no, and Tom Pateman, 59no, saw Brompton ease to an eight-wicket triumph at home to Cayton 2nds.

Pete Webster had earlier taken 3-20 as Cayton were dismissed for 159, Jes Riley, 32, and Simon Glave, 34, starring for Cayton.

All-rounder Oli West hit an unbeaten 69 for Wold Newton and took 3-74 as his side won by five wickets at home to Grindale.

Jon Huntsman took 5-16 as Settrington won by six wickets at Cloughton

Glynn Botterill, 3-23, marked his debut for Cloughton with 3-23.

Eric Hall put in the performance of the day, powering his way to 151 and then bagging 3-35 as Forge Valley 2nds eased to a 158-run division B win at Ganton.

John Bannister and John Richardson took four wickets apiece for Ganton, who slid to 142 all out in reply, Hall taking 3-55 to cap a brilliant all-round day.

Club chairman John Morrison, drafted in from the second team, struck a crucial 12 not out to help Ravenscar to a one-wicket win at Thornton Dale.

Skipper Jish Rewcrowft, 3-19, and A Khaliq, 4-21, sent Dale crashing to 95 all out.

Fine bowling from opening pair Col Lockwood, 3-20, and Lee Oliver, 3-22, saw the visitors stumble but Morrison and Rob Watson, 3no, kept their cool to claim a dramatic win, the winning runs coming from four overthrows.

Freddie Schmuck clattered 71 as Scalby 2nds won by 31 runs at Scarborough 3rds.

The visitors posted 204-7, and although D Foster, 50, and B Milburn, 44, gave the home side hope, Tony Geall’s 4-36 quashed any such hopes.

Liam Scott struck 74 and Ryan Hargreaves 42 as Staxton 2nds won by 29 runs at Bridlington 2nds, Kingsley Gray chipping in with 38.

Skipper Steve Lount led by example with a powerful 84, Callum Flowerdew adding 36, but Brid fell short with 185-3.

Steve Husband’s 75 not out ensured a five-wicket win for Fylingdales at Sewerby 2nds.

Barry Heyes added 53, C Ward taking 3-42.

Harry Gunning’s courageous 76 not out proved to be futile as Sewerby were dismissed for 175, Tom Shrimpton bagging 3-37.

Matty Webster took 4-21 and hit 30 as Heslerton 2nds strolled to a nine-wicket win at home to Cloughton 2nds.

James Duffill claimed 3-28 as Cloughton sank to 83 all out despite a plucky 25 from Aaron Virr, Webster and James Almond, 33no, wrapping up the victory for Heslerton.

Luke Dixon scored a marvellous 91 not out and Marcus Garcia 44 not out as Flamborough posted 183-2 at home to Ebberston 2nds.

M Holmes then took 4-31 as Ebberston slumped to 73 all out.

Dan Hardey took 3-17 and hit 40 as Ryedale won by 19 runs at home to newly-promoted Great Habton.

Phil Marr’s unbeaten eased Muston to a 73-run win at Wykeham 2nds.

Muston set a total of 166-5, Barry Anderson taking 5-27 to seal the win.
