DERWENT VALLEY LEAGUE: Cayton 3rds clinch title

Cayton 3rds secured promotion as champions of division C of the Derwent Valley League with a comfortable 65-run win at home to rivals Scalby 3rds, who also went up as runners-up despite finishing on the same points as Muston 2nds, who suffered a shock 21-run loss at Thornton Dale 2nds, Scalby going up due to theirsuperior average of runs per wicket.

Sunday, 31st August 2014, 12:22 am

Visitors Scalby must have fancied their chances when Cayton were limited to 111-8 from their 40 overs, Darryl Morley taking 3-22 and Shaun Rennison scoring 28 for the home side.

Any Scalby hopes were soon extinguised by a spell of deadly bowling from Darren Jones, 4-15, and Simon Stubbs, 4-9, as the visitors buckled to 46 all out and Cayton could crack open the champagne to celebrate their title win.

Muston 2nds paid the price for slipping up at Thornton Dale 2nds, the hosts winning by 21 runs.

Skipper Patrick Stephenson struck 46 for Dale, while Paul Waring hit 31 as they posted 162-8, Babu Matthew taking 3-38.

Ray Roberts struck 29 and James McMillan 26 as Muston chased victory but ended up short on 141-8, just nine runs away from the bonus point which would have secured them promotion.

Veteran spinner John Ellis was the pick of the home bowlers with 3-40.

Ravenscar 2nds’ superb end to the season was capped with a 53-run win at Valley Bar Nomads, a result that sees the away side finish in fourth spot.

Opener Chris Bloomfield gave the visitors a solid start with 24, but fine bowlinf from Anthony Hulme, 3-40, and Dave Parkinson, 3-22, saw the villagers slump to 99-9, but a superb final wicket stand of 60 from John Morrison, 26no, and Anthony White, 13, helped them to 159 all out.

Craig Best looked to be putting Nomads in with a good chance with a powerful 36, but excellent bowling from teenager Luke Stokoe, 4-33, and his father Jon, 3-18 sent the home side crashing to 106 all out.

Both Stokoes bagged two wickets in two balls as Ravenscar ended the campaign on a high note.

Jake Sarup’s stunning spell of 8-30 helped Ganton 2nds scoop an unlikely 27-run win at Wykeham 3rds.

Joel Sarup hit 31 as Ganton were dismissed for 107 thanks to fine bowling from Lewis Eustace, 4-10, and George Shannon, 3-26, and Wykeham looked to be in complete control.

Jake Sarup had other ideas as his eight wickets help Ganton skittle the home side for just 80 runs.

Wold Newton 2nds secured promotion as division B runners-up despite losing by 34 runs at Kirkbymoorside 2nds.

Jamie Harper struck 52 and Howard Mudd 31 as Kirkby posted 124 all out, Tim Lazenby taking a magnificent 7-29.
