DERWENT VALLEY LEAGUE: Cayton 3rds clinch title

Cayton 3rds secured promotion as champions of division C of the Derwent Valley League with a comfortable 65-run win at home to rivals Scalby 3rds, who also went up as runners-up despite finishing on the same points as Muston 2nds, who suffered a shock 21-run loss at Thornton Dale 2nds, Scalby going up due to theirsuperior average of runs per wicket.

Visitors Scalby must have fancied their chances when Cayton were limited to 111-8 from their 40 overs, Darryl Morley taking 3-22 and Shaun Rennison scoring 28 for the home side.

Any Scalby hopes were soon extinguised by a spell of deadly bowling from Darren Jones, 4-15, and Simon Stubbs, 4-9, as the visitors buckled to 46 all out and Cayton could crack open the champagne to celebrate their title win.

Ravenscar 2nds’ superb end to the season was capped with a 53-run win at Valley Bar Nomads, a result that sees the away side finish in fourth spot.

Opener Chris Bloomfield gave the visitors a solid start with 24, but fine bowlinf from Anthony Hulme, 3-40, and Dave Parkinson, 3-22, saw the villagers slump to 99-9, but a superb final wicket stand of 60 from John Morrison, 26no, and Anthony White, 13, helped them to 159 all out.

Craig Best looked to be putting Nomads in with a good chance with a powerful 36, but excellent bowling from teenager Luke Stokoe, 4-33, and his father Jon, 3-18 sent the home side crashing to 106 all out.

Both Stokoes bagged two wickets in two balls as Ravenscar ended the campaign on a high note.

Jake Sarup had other ideas as his eight wickets help Ganton skittle the home side for just 80 runs.

Wold Newton 2nds secured promotion as division B runners-up despite losing by 34 runs at Kirkbymoorside 2nds.
