Michael Thompson and Tom Steyert shine in Whitby CC defeat at Seaton Carew

Whitby Cricket Club 1sts lost by 24 runs at North Yorkshire & South Durham Cricket League Division 2 title-chasers Seaton Carew on Saturday.

Michael Thompson put in an excellent bowling performance for the visitors, finishing with a cracking 5-36 from 15 overs, with superb support by skipper Tom Steyert, who recorded 4-33 from his 10.2 overs.

The home side looked set for a large total at 158-2 thanks to the best efforts of skipper Liam Gough (64) and Jake Richardson (57), who put on 136 for the third wicket, but Thompson and Steyert sent them crashing from 172-3 to 187 all out in 48.2 overs.

Whitby lost wickets at regular intervals in their run-chase, but at 124-5 they looked well placed, needing only 64 runs to win from 20 overs remaining.

Rhys Buck (36) and opener Chris Knight (24) were the top-scorers for the visitors, as 27 extras also boosted their total, but they slipped to 163 all out with 6.2 overs remaining.

Whitby 1sts will hope to bounce back with a win at home to third-placed Saltburn 2nds.

Whitby 2nds also failed to chase down a target of 170 as they lost by 49 runs at home to Great Ayton 2nds.

Mark Jackson was the pick of the home bowling attack with 4-46 in 10 overs as Ayton posted 169-8, skipper Ricky Hall chipping in with 2-25 while Steven Allen and Kieran Purvis also taking a wicket apiece.

Opener Rikki Lawrence’s 59 from 91 balls was the shining lights of the home team’s reply, but was offered very little support as Whitby 2nds slumped to 120 all out in 33.1 overs.

Will Richardson, with 19, was the only other home batsman to make it into double figures.

Alfie Taylor-Clarke took 4-35 for the visitors.

Whitby 2nds head to Hartlepool 2nds this coming Saturday.

Whitby 3rds, who were without a match last weekend, are in action at Great Ayton 3rds this Sunday in the Sunday Conference South.
