Opener Oliver Stephenson aiming to help Scarborough CC push on

Scarborough Cricket Club opener Oliver Stephenson has hailed his side’s recent run of form and is keen to help the younger players develop throughout the season.

The right-handed batsmen has scored 186 runs this season, and is enjoying life at the top of the batting order in the Yorkshire Premier League North.

Scarborough held on for a dramatic one-run win at Driffield on Saturday, followed by a defeat against Whitley Hall in the Viking Cup 24 hours later.

He said: “The game against Driffield was a good result for us and it’s always nice to be on the right end of a tight game.

“As a side we stuck to it, built a really strong foundation and it really shows where we are as a group of players.”

Stephenson hit 64 off 92 balls on Saturday and helped his side post a challenging total against rivals Driffield.

The opening batsman said: “It’s always nice to contribute to a victory and I’m really relishing the opportunity to work alongside the younger lads in the squad.

“There’s a serious amount of talent in the team and I really enjoy passing on my guidance and advice.

“I have experience with the league and the squad is in such a good position at the moment.”

Despite a mixed start to the season, Stephenson admits that his side are in good form and feeling confident ahead of this weekend’s game against Sheriff Hutton Bridge.

He added: “We started the season really well and that win against Yorkshire Academy was superb.

“We were definitely unlucky not to get anything from the game against Stamford Bridge, but we’ve bounced back really well.

“Saturday will be another tough game and they are a really strong side.

“They have some really talented players and I’m confident that they’ll come to North Marine Road and try to take the points.”
