Rain saves Scarborough from home defeat

The elements came to Scarborough CC first team’s rescue on Saturday as they were struggling on 57-3 in reply to Barnsley’s 201-3 from just 30 overs at a soggy North Marine Road.

Rain stopped play after 13.5 overs with the hosts having only just passed the 50-run mark, Carl Joyce the only batsman to have made any impression before being dismissed for 29.

Ali Jahingir had taken 2-10 from three overs for the visitors, James Wainman having claimed the other wicket to fall to cap a fine day for the all-rounder.

In a rain-reduced innings, the visitors racked up a superb 201-3 thanks to a blistering 105 from just 67 balls by Wainman, the number three batsman smashing 11 fours and four sixes as he tormented the home bowling attack.

Overseas star Zohaib Ahmad also chipped in with an unbeaten 61 from 60 balls, which included five fours and a six, sharing a stand of 151 runs in just 19 overs with Wainman,

After this batting display by Barnsley and their own sluggish start in response the hosts must have been relieved when the heavens iopened and called a halt to proceedings, giving each side three points.

Scarborough 2nds’ York League division three south game at Civil Service was also rained off, as was Flixton’s division one clash at Bolton Percy.

Service bowler G Couch had scooped 6-28 as Scarborough had reached 120-9 from 41 overs when rain stopped play, while hosts Bolton Percy were 84-3 off 30 overs when the elements halted their match.
