Scarborough CC win league thriller but lose out in cup clash

At King’s Mill Road Nicky Johnson was given out obstructing the field off the final ball as Driffield Town lost to Scarborough by one run.

Breidyn Schaper who scored 81 the previous week against Castleford was again in the runs for the visitors this time making 86, opener Oliver Stephenson made 64 and James Wainman 34, but once the latter was out the visitors lost five wickets for 41 runs.

Johnson took 3-53 to go alongside James Anson’s figures of 4-62 as the innings closed on 245-9.

Teenager opener Noah Kelly scored 84 in reply and Owen Goldsworthy (51) scored a run-a-ball half-century to go alongside a similar effort from Danny Broumpton (50).

When Kelly was out at the start of the 49th over 16 runs were still needed and despite a six off the penultimate ball the visitors held on.

A small consolation for the hosts is the narrow margin of defeat earned them enough points to climb out of the relegation places.

On Sunday, Scarborough lost out by 25 runs in the second round of the Viking Cup against Whitley Hall.

Romario Braithwaite took 3-27 as the South Yorkshire side were dismissed for 183, Danial Rafiq hitting 38 and Matthew Cartwright 33.

In reply, the hosts slipped to 38-4 as Dan Waldron took 4-20, and although James Wainman tried his best to get Scarborough back on track with 59, a spell of 3-36 from Sam Woodcock saw Scarborough dismissed for 158 from 36.5 overs.

Folkton & Flixton got the better of Premier Division promotion rivals Beverley Town confirming their place in the top two with a four-wicket win.

Harry Walmsley returned figures of 6-60 as the visitors were restricted to 209-9 in which opener Ben Hatfield top scored with 76.

Andrew Burton was next best with 31 both batters part of Walmsley’s haul.

Tom Norman (55) and Richard Malthouse (57) began the hosts’ reply with a stand of 121, Norman, the divisions leading run scorer, making his third half-century of the season, Jamie Roe (3-45) struck back with three wickets but could not prevent the home side securing maximum points with a couple of overs to spare.

Scarborough 2nds lost out by five wickets at home to Pocklington in Division One East.

Opener Ed Hopper hit 50, while his brother Charlie added 34 and David Snowball 34no as Scarborough posted 176-8, Ben Shingles taking 4-33 and Connaire Brattan 3-59.

Ed Hopper took 2-24 as Scarborough tried to get back into the game, but Ted Donkin's 91 not out saw Pock to victory.
