Staxton edge past Ebberston to win Harburn Cup final

Holders Staxton were forced to dig deep for a four-wicket win against Ebberston in the AndyHire Harburn Cup final at a sun-drenched North Marine Road, completing their league and cup double with just two balls to spare.

The Evening League division A champions Staxton won the toss and put Ebberston into bat in the 15 eight-ball overs final at Scarborough CC.

Ebberston started well with a 35-run opening partnership by Eddie Craggs, 18, and Jonny Mason, 40, but then lost wickets until Mason was joined by Matty Turnbull who put on 50 runs in a third-wicket partnership.

Mason scored his 40 runs off just 32 balls while Turnbull hit a great 65 with five fours and two sixes off just 46 balls and he was finally out with the score at 131.

Ebberston then went on to score just 10 more runs to finish with a respectable total of 141-7 off their 15 overs.

The best bowlers for Staxton were Adam Hargreaves with 4-35, Linden Gray with 1-24 and young Dan Outhart with 2-40.

In reply Staxton lost prolific batsman Rob Pinder for just eight, caught behind with the score at 14.

Fellow opener Paul Witty hit a fine 28 runs in 26 balls including four fours and a six. David Morris, at number three, then went on to score a brilliant 44 in just 35 balls with five fours and a six and was well assisted by Chris Dove, who hit a brisk 17.

Craggs came on to bowl for Ebberston and got Morris out with his first ball and with Turnbull bowling tightly at the other end it left Staxton with five wickets down needing 12 runs to win off the last over to be bowled by Craggs.

This went as follows, dot ball, a bye, a wicket with Adam Hargreaves bowled, and then in came Staxton skipper Dan Bulman who hit a straight six on his first ball, followed this with a four and then a single to win the game with just two balls remaining to complete a brilliant final.

The bowling figures for Ebberston were Turnbull, 2-19, Craggs, 2-21, Eddie Swiers, 1-27, and Reece Milner, 1-40.

Dan Bulman finished on 11 no and Linden Gray with 7 no to retain the trophy for Staxton and complete the league and cup double.

Sharron Blackstone, a joint director of AndyHire, the league sponsors, presented the cups to the two teams.

League secretary Bernard Goulding thanked Scarborough Cricket Club for the use of the ground for the final, the groundsman John Dodds for the great wicket he had prepared, the umpires Steve Dodds and Tony Graves, the scorers Edwin Cooper for Staxton and Pat Hanby for Ebberston, Keiran Rutter for operating the electronic scoreboards and all those present for buying raffle tickets the proceeds of which will be donated to local charities.

Result: Staxton 142-6 (David Morris 44, Paul Witty 28, Matthew Turnbull 2-19, Eddie Craggs 2-21) beat Ebberston 141-7 (Matthew Turnbull 65, Jonny Mason 40, Dan Outhart 2-40, Adam Hargreaves 4-35) by 4 wkts.
