Staxton move top after Staithes win

New leaders Staxton stretched their unbeaten run to 18 games in the Beckett League premier division after a win by 105 runs against previous table-toppers Staithes.

Staxton suffered two early blows as Dave Morris and Paul Witty fell victim to Paul Theaker, with the score hanging worryingly on 7-2.

Jodie Robson and Nick Gibson (55) then put on 73 for the third wicket, before Staxton were slowed to 102-5 after 28 overs.

Chris Dove and Linden Gray then saved their blushes, the latter making 62 not out from 56 balls, while Gray chipped in with an unbeaten 55 from 59.

These knocks took Staxton to 208-5, with Paul Theaker’s bowling return of 2-51 proving to be the best.

Staithes moved swiftly to 59-2 after 15 overs, but when Stuart Marsay fell to the left-arm spin of Elliot Cooper for 33, they never recovered.

Six wickets went down for just 14 runs and Staithes slumped to 73-8, with Cooper taking 3-16 from seven overs.

Dan Outhart then took two wickets in two balls to end the Staithes plight.

Ebberston cruised to a comfortable nine-wicket win against Forge Valley.

Valley were shot down for just 79, after a mammoth collapse from 79-4.

Tom Brough’s 35 and Eric Hall’s 29 had moved them on to that position, but they lost their last six wickets for no runs, as Frankie Beal (7-54) ripped through.

The opening pair of Ady Turnbull (39) and Jonny Mason (29no) made sure Ebberston strode home.

Filey had too much for Heslerton in their win by 41 runs.

Filey posted a daunting 243-3 as Paul Bowes top scored with a fine 87 not out, with Aaron Howard also hitting an unbeaten 68.

Ryan Baldry had earlier also added a half century.

Heslerton’s reply centered around good knocks from Richard Bentley (54) and Rob Middlewood (48) but only Sam Triffit with 28 offered further support as the fell 41 runs short.

Nawton Grange travelled to Scalby and won by just seven runs in an exciting encounter.

Tom Garbutt’s half century and 30 from Adam Durrant had been the main factors in visitors 129 all out, with John Barton and Ryan Labuschange both claiming 3-26. Adam Waugh made 28 in response but 4-36 from Tim Sharples and 3-22 from spinner Dean Coote saw Nawton gain a narrow win and 17 points.

Cayton’s Rhys Crowe played a starring role in his side’s win at Flixton 2nds.

Australian Nick Strangio made an unbeaten 81 as the visitors posted 203-3. John Crowe made 42 not out, young prospect Josh Brown 29 and Rhys Crowe 33 as Cayton gained full batting points.

Flixton’s Chris Allen made 70 in reply, but 3-38 from Crowe and Jake McAleese’s 3-44 saw Flixton dismissed for 161. This 20-point win moved Cayton into second place,

In division A, it was a day for bowlers as Mulgrave beat Cayton 2nds by nine runs.

Mulgrave looked in desperate trouble after twin brothers Tom (3-20) and James Ward (3-25) ripped out their batting heart for just 88.

Cayton skipper Simon Glave made 33, but support was found wanting as Craig Thompson (3-12) and Michael Thompson’s 3-19 bundled the hosts out for 79.

Following their opening day defeat against Sherburn Mulgrave have rattled up six consecutive wins and are seven points clear at the top.

Grindale travelled to Seamer and registered their fourth win on the bounce in another low scoring game.

Grindale batted first and Josh Dawson’s 48 and 34 from Ian Cousins were the only men to trouble the scorers as Paul Grennhough’s medium pacers claimed 4-21.

Gregg Chadwick made 51 in response, but all-rounder’s Dawson and Cousins proved themselves to be the star men on the day with them sharing seven wickets as Seamer fell for 96.

Wykeham’s recent good run continued with a 34-run win over Settrington.

Craig Bateman’s 43 was the cornerstone of Wykeham’s 142 all out as Jonty Rounthwaite (4-17) and Andy Monkman, who took 3-32, restricted the hosts.

Eddie Rounthwaite made 28, but seam bowler Steve Day’s 3-16, 3-20 from the inform paceman Dave Pearson and three wickets for Matty Vincent kept Settrington at bay as they made 108-9.

Inconsistent Sherburn lost at resurgent Cloughton who posted 180-7 with Chris Malthouse making a superb 79 and

captain Ricky Nock contributing 48.

Glynn Botterill took 3-17 and Tom Watson claimed 3-29 as only Jordan Wharton, who made 40 and Chris Crawford (38) showed any real form.

Jack Hakings also took three wickets as Cloughton move off the foot of the table.

The game between Wold Newton and Brompton was rained off.

The local derby between Bridlington 2nds and Sewerby 3rds was the only game to survive the weather in division B.

Sewerby dismissed Bridlington for 124 with Jack Newby the star taking 6-21. Elliot Traves made 30.

Sewerby had no answer to the Brid attack with young Callum Battams taking 3-11 and two wicket apiece for Oliver Beckett and Cal Parkin.

Ebberston 2nds came out on top in a close encounter in division C at Great Habton, winning by 10 runs.

Mike Horsley top scored for the visitors with 48 as Will Curtis claimed 4-21.

Sam Davies made a superb 71 in reply, but Simon Pickering’s 3-31 and Horsley, completing a great all round performance with 3-18, saw Ebberston home.

Wykeham 2nds moved to the top of the division following a six-wicket win at Heslerton 2nds.

Ben Norman claimed 3-18 and James Wilson 3-34 to bundle the home side out for 98. Ian Thompson’s good form continued as he made 28 to

steer his side to victory.

Ryedale gained 20 points from their game against Cloughton 2nds, who concede the fixture, while Flamborough’s game with Seamer 2nds fell victim to the weather.
