Elementary for Dr Watson on East Yorkshire event debut

The course, which is notorious for some muddy sections, was even more testing this year after the above average rainfall throughout the winter months.Dr Nev Watson who recently joined the club from top Midland Club Tipton Harriers, made a most impressive league debut with a 44-second winning margin, on a surface which he found very testing.He was followed by over-40 veteran Chris Duck who was 11th overall and second in his age group. He was closely followed by another league debutant in 20-year-old Tyler Evans, who was 14th.The experienced veteran Kevin Moment was next in 18th and also second over-45, and Matt Middleton in 22nd.Glyn Hewitt closed in for the team which was second to League Leaders City of Hull Athletic Club in 32nd. After a win at the previous fixture at Langdale End, the team moved up to fourth place overall and with the addition of new members is hopeful of future progress in the league.One again the women’s team was led home by Katy Stringer, who was third overall first over-40.Next home was Heidi Coates in 21st overall and also fourth over-35.The team was completed when Leoni Bradnam who is competing in her first league season, finished up in 33rd. The team was fifth and remains fifth overall but closing in on fourth spot.The club’s veterans once again achieved some results in their age groups. Neil Scruton headed the over-65s in 37th and just outside the scoring team. Mally Sweetlove was second over-60 and Dave Fox third over-65.Former Scarborough FC and Leeds footballer Tony Hackworth made a club and league debut. Not surprisingly he found the course very challenging, but he finished most notably up in 64th overall of 153 finishers. He is looking forward to new challenges and is booked to run in the Leeds Half Marathon and the York Marathon later this year.Other Scarborough results.Men: 44 Andy Curtis, 49 Geoff Cromack, 52 Dave Shipley, 70 Mark May, 73 Jonathan PoulterWomen: 33 Sam Shepherdson, 38 Sally Kingscott, 41 Linda Hinchliffe.Sacha Butterworth and Christian Mummert, who are both students at Scalby School, represented North Yorkshire Schools at a Schools Inter County match. The match included teams from Cumbria, Cleveland, Northumberland and Durham. It included a final trial for the English Schools Cross Country Championships.Sacha, who was competing for the county at cross country for the first time and had previously gained selection for the English Schools Championships at the County Championships, was the seventh scorer for the team which came third.Christian, who had previously competed as a Year Seven and had also been selected for the English Schools, was third scorer for the team, which was third.Jack Robertson who is in final year of studies at Loughborough University, competed for the university at the British Universities Cross Country Championships. He finished up in 95th of 477 and was closed in for the B team which was 22nd of 99 teams. He is now looking to competing regularly in the East Yorkshire League next season along with some recent signings.Chris Allen competed in the Dewsbury 10 kilometre Road Race, which is a top class West Yorkshire road race, and achieved 250th place of the 1081 finishers in 41 minutes 26 seconds, which is the fastest time for the distance by club members in 2016.Nine club members competed in the latest Sewerby Parkrun. The leaders were Michael Dowson, ninth in 21 minutes and 21 seconds, and Mark Malig who achieved a personal best 22.3 when finishing 18th.Melanie Padgham was next home in tenth female and also first Over-50 in 27.20.Three other club members were also first in their age groups, Jessica Raw at under-14 in 28.16, Lesley Bayes in the over-65s in 29.07 and club press officer Mick Thompson as an over-75, as he continued his comeback 14 seconds up on the previous week with 40.34.Also on the comeback trail is Pete Barnard, who was 49th overall male and fifth over-50 in 27.47.Ciara Harper was 22nd female and third under-14 in 30.06 and Mike Padgham, who is getting back to his best, was overall 59th male and sixth over-55.
