The Gunners had to work even harder for the three points after Hinderwell’s Beth Mead was sent off after receiving a second yellow card an hour into the contest.

Mead’s teammates saw the encounter out despite being down to 10 players, with Millie Turner’s own goal then added to by Lotte Wubben-Moy’s second-half effort to wrap up a 2-0 victory.

Arsenal next face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, March 27.

The game will take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with kick-off at 3.30pm.

Women’s football also received a boost this week with the news that from next season, WSL games will be shown live across the BBC and Sky in the multi-million-pound deal.

Remaining matches not selected for broadcast by the BBC or Sky will be shown live on FA Player.

England and Manchester City captain Steph Houghton told BBC Sport it was an “amazing step forward” for women’s football and the players can’t wait to “show the world what an unbelievable league we have”.

“The way this sport has developed in this country over the last few years has been unbelievable,” said the former Sunderland player.

“I think this will really push our league to be the best in Europe, if not the world.”
