Boro boldly go for winger Kirk

Scarborough Athletic bosses Paul Foot and Bryan Hughes have snapped up winger Tyrone Kirk as they continue to strengthen their squad.

The 28-year-old started out as a youngster at his hometown team Scunthorpe United, moving on in August 2007 to spend a couple of seasons at Stamford.

After a trial at Sheffield United, Kirk signed a six-month deal at Macclesfield Town in August 2009.

A loan spell at Welsh Premier League side Rhyl saw him appear in the Champions League, before going on to play for Boston United, Corby Town and Grantham Town.

Last season Kirk appeared for Loughborough Dynamo, Eastwood Town and Lincoln United in the Evo-Stik South, most recently playing for Barwell FC in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

Kirk has been out of playing football for 11 months, but could not resist the chance to get back playing with Boro.

He said: “I’ve had a few offers from other clubs but when I got the call from Paul Foot it caught my interest and is the first time I have been really interested in getting back involved in football.

“I am a winger who can play on either side; I love running at people and entertaining the fans. I know Steve Ridley from our days at Scunthorpe United and have heard about the great following the club gets.”

After a break of 11 months, Kirk is clear that he needs to improve his fitness, but the prospect of a play-off challenge is one he is excited to be involved in.

“I need to get my fitness back after not playing, but once I get going I am keen to show the management and fans what I can do.”

Boro joint-manager Hughes said: “Tyrone is an exciting player to bring on board and I am looking forward to working with him.

“I knew about him from his time at Rhyl and he will be a real attacking threat for us going forward.

“Tyrone has to work on his fitness so we will monitor how he gets on in the home games this week against Brighouse and Spennymoor and take things from there, but if we can get him back to his best then he will be a fantastic addition.”
