Bridlington Town suffer 3-1 defeat at home to Ossett United

Bridlington Town were beaten 3-1 at home by Ossett United on Saturday despite a bright start and spells of pressure throughout the afternoon.

The Seasiders began the game on the front foot in an open, end-to-end opening. Ossett looked to test the back line early with balls over the top, but Jonathon Dash was alert to the danger, standing tall to deny the visitors inside the opening minutes.

With both sides settling into the contest, clear chances were at a premium until the breakthrough arrived on the 14th minute.

Matty Dixon floated a free-kick into the box on top of the goalkeeper and Jake Day reacted quickest, getting the slightest of touches to guide the ball past the goalkeeper and a scrambled centre back to give Bridlington the lead.

The advantage, however, was short-lived. Ossett responded quickly and levelled the scores just three minutes later through Rhys Thomas, shifting the momentum back towards the visitors.

Ossett continued to pose problems going forward, forcing Dash into action on several occasions and eventually taking the lead with a goal by Jack Crook on the 25th minute, while Bridlington pushed for a second goal. Jake Day thought he had found the net again on 37 minutes, but the flag was raised for offside.

At half-time, Bridlington trailed 2-1.

The second half began with a change for the Seasiders, teenager Riley Cooper replaced Day, but it was Ossett who struck again just four minutes after the restart.

Joseph Crosby drove a low ball across goal, which clipped the post and found its way in to extend the visitors’ lead.

Despite the setback, Bridlington continued to create chances. Cooper fired narrowly wide, Ben Farrar attempted to lift the ball over the goalkeeper, and a free-kick from the edge of the box skimmed just past the post as the Seasiders searched for a route back into the contest to no avail.

Further attempts by Town followed, including a dangerous low cross from Gibson-Booth that flashed across the face of goal with no one there to apply the finishing touch.

Ossett were reduced to 10 men late on after a coming together as between Crook and Dash, but Bridlington were unable to capitalise despite further efforts being pushed away by the visiting goalkeeper.

Substitutions saw Cameron Blackburn, Johari Lacey and others introduced as the Seasiders continued to push, but the scoreline remained unchanged.

At full-time, it was Ossett United who took the points, with Bridlington left to reflect that ended in defeat.
