DARREN KELLY: Over the moon with the start the boys have made

I have to say I’m over the moon with the start the players have made to the new season.

It’s a strange scenario for us right now, with moving games away from home, the weird FA Cup game behind closed doors and all the uncertainty con the horizon at the moment due to this dreadful virus.

So for the boys to go out and put in three really top drawer performances and pick up seven points from a possible nine is fantastic.

That said, the last thing we want to be doing is getting ahead of ourselves.

It is always a long season at this level and this will be no different.

If anything I feel the league has become a hell of a lot stronger this season and it will be even tougher to maintain a push at the higher end of the table.

We’re still far from the finished article.

We clearly still need to get in a striker to help Nathan Cartman out - but let me tell you that is easier said than done and it is not for the want of trying that we haven’t managed to fetch one in yet.

I’m pretty pleased with other areas of the side.

We’re certainly well set defensively, the additions of Dylan Cogill, Will Thornton, Lewis Turner and Ryan Whitley have really boosted us.

In midfield we’re a little light at the moment but I’ve been so impressed with Bailey Gooda in there and we will be stronger once we get Michael Coulson, Kieran Glynn and Luke Porritt back.

The players have put in two incredible shifts, first at FC United on Saturday where I thought they really rolled up their sleeves and grafted for each other, and then in our 3-0 win at Stalybridge on Tuesday.

We are very lucky that we have no game this weekend as I think we would’ve struggled to get a full squad out.

Josh Barrett and Neal Bishop came off with knocks on Tuesday and I think Saturday may have come too soon for them, Harry Coates has a little niggle, Glynn is still suspended and Coulson may or may not have been fit.

We will give the boys plenty chance to rest up over the rest of the week.

I’d like to finish by thanking all our fans who travelled to Stalybridge on Tuesday night - I was blown away by the support and I know the players genuinely appreciate it too.

I just hope that we can get them back in the Flamingo Land Stadium soon.
