These aims have been boosted in recent weeks by a double boost for the Scarborough-based set-up.

Barber himself has been given the role of under-eights coach at Championship side Leeds United, which will provide the perfect path for the area’s top young players.

As well as that, he has moved to set up a goalkeeper programme, which will run alongside the academy programme.

Barber's new role will help further progression of the players in his elite academy.

He will join young players Jacob Hakings, Theo Watson and Sutton Greening, who have all progressed from the Scarborough-based set-up.

The coach said: “I am really looking forward to this opportunity, it will also help with the progression of local players.

“I am in constant dialogue with the head of recruitment, so if anyone impresses then they will get their chance.”

Meanwhile, Pickering Town keeper Toby Wells and former Scarborough Athletic stopper are currently conducting the keeper coaching for youngsters of under-seven to under-12, but Barber is already looking at stretching that bracket.

He said: “This is massive for the area and the area’s young goalkeepers.

“Over the years there hasn’t been that much specific coaching for goalkeepers in Scarborough, so we are providing that and helping them to move forward.

“Toby is a former coach with the i2i Academy, while Rory has played for Scarborough Athletic, he will be helping out.

“We are starting off with training for youngsters between under-seven and 12, then in the future we’ll be extending that.

“It is all about improving football in this area, so these sessions are available for anybody who wants to come down.”
