Holden in line to face Droylsden

Former Cayton Corinthians defender Harry Holden could be given a starting role for Scarborough Athletic on Saturday against Droylsden.

The emergence of Holden was one of a number of bright points for joint-manager Paul Foot when he watched Boro’s under-21s suffer a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Tadcaster Albion on Tuesday night.

Both Holden and Connor Campbell hit the net for Boro, while there were starts for first-teamers Paul Robson, Joe Lamplough, Alex Peterson, Caine Winfarrah and Joe Fox.

Foot is looking for defensive numbers ahead of this weekend’s game due to the return to Bradford Park Avenue of on-loan centre-back Ryan Qualter.

Boro have also been stung by the news that keeper Erik Bukran (Pictured) has had his loan spell ended by parent club Hull City.

Foot said: “As a whole the team played well against a good Tadcaster side.

“I was very impressed with Harry at centre-back, after the game I spoke to him and said that he’d have a good chance with of making it into the first team.

“We have brought in loan players in the past from different clubs, but we have an under-21 team for a reason.

“There is a possibility he could be involved against Droylsden on Saturday.

“I was also impressed with Connor Campbell, who played up front and Tyson Stubbings, who we know from before.

“All of the first team lads came through the game well with no injuries, so that will do them a world of good.”

The absence of Bukran, Qualter and the suspended Fernando Moke leaves three big gaps for Foot to fill this weekend, but he is confident that he has cover.

He added: “Obviously losing Ryan and Erik is a big blow.

“We are still talking to Bradford Park Avenue about the situation with Ryan, it would be great if we could get something further sorted.

“We do have cover though in Steve Mallory, Joe Lamplough and Harry, who could all slot in at centre-back.

“Rob Zand has shown great loyalty to the club over the past few weeks, so he will be given the chance on Saturday.”

Having pushed at the top of the table last season, Droylsden haven’t had the best of starts to the current campaign, having won just four of their 17 games. They also slipped to a 6-1 defeat against Clitheroe last weekend.

Foot added: “I don’t like games like this because I suppose people expect us to go out and win.

“That was the case with Farsley and New Mills.

“They may have made a lot of changes from their defeat last weekend, so you just have to go out and concentrate on your own side.

“I’ll be sending out a team to win the game.

“I’d take a 1-0 win all day long, scoring lots of goals doesn’t matter at this stage.

“A win will give us that bit of confidence that we can build on.”
