Hughes happy with Boro friendlies

Scarborough Athletic joint-boss Bryan Hughes is delighted with the line-up of his side’s pre-season preparatory fixtures.

Boro have confirmed Accrington Stanley on July 21 and then Tadcaster Albion on July 25, both games will take place at Scarborough RUFC’s Silver Royd.

These games will be joined by friendlies against Barton, Hull United, Thackley, Bridlington Town, Goole, Selby and a Scarborough Saturday League representative team.

Hughes said: “I think we have a good mix, which is exactly what we wanted.

“We wanted to secure that league club in Scarborough and we have managed that with Accrington, which is fantastic for us and the town.

“I played for Accrington when I came back from Iceland and then I was supposed to sign for Bury in the season I joined Scarborough, but they had a transfer embargo on.

“Lincoln were interested at the time, but Darren France asked me to come down and help out get Scarborough promoted, the rest is history.

“Accrington are a great club and I know John Coleman likes to pass the ball, so it will be a really good test for us.

“We had been trying to get York City, but I have spoken to their manager Russ Wilcox and he is keen to forge links, which could help both clubs in the future.

“The Tadcaster game is another great one for us because there are so many links between the clubs.

“They have Jimmy Beadle, Paddy Miller, David Brown and Andy Milne, who was player of the year for them last season.

“They are an up and coming club, so it should be an interesting and a good run-out for us.”

Hughes added: “We have the games against Barton, Hull and Thackley, three good sides and matches that will be great for our fitness.

“We have tried to put together games that will mirror the sides we’ll be facing up to in the Evo-Stik North next season.

“Overall I’m very happy with what we have.”
