Spence signed for John Deacey’s side from Championship club Middlesbrough in 2019 and admits that he “jumped at the chance” to sign for the club.

He told The Scarborough News: “I wasn’t massively disappointed to leave Middlesbrough and it was always my aim to move on and play men’s football.

“My dad knew John (Deacey) and I bought into the club’s vision and once I’d seen the facilities it was a no-brainer to sign for the club.”

National League North outfit York City offered Spence the opportunity to go on trial and he saw it as a chance to work on his game even more.

Despite impressing boss Steve Watson, he returned to Boro due to the complications with the ongoing pandemic.

“I’ve always wanted to play as high as possible and I saw it as a chance to progress my game and keep working hard,” added the versatile youngster.

“I was really frustrated to miss out on the move and it left me extremely drained because you’re completely in the dark.

“I’ve loved every moment at Scarborough and returning to the club still made me very happy.”

In October, Halifax announced the signing of Spence on a free transfer and the defender made an immediate return to the Flamingo Land Stadium and he shared his delight at returning on loan.

He added: “I did get a little emotional when the move to Halifax was fully completed.

“I was absolutely buzzing to sign for them, but I always knew that I would return to Scarborough to continue playing football.

“I jumped at the chance to return, and as soon as Darren (Kelly) congratulated me, we began talking about my return to the club.”

Boro manager Kelly’s professionalism and organisation has been something that has delighted Spence and he believes that his game will continue to improve under the watchful eye of the former Oldham Athletic and Halifax Town boss during his loan stay with the Flamingo Land Stadium club.

Spence added: “Darren has been a breath of fresh air for the club and everyone admires him.

“The results clearly improved when he arrived at the club and he’s made everyone feel so positive.”
