Hessle started with the wind behind them and they took the lead with their first attack on two minutes when a cross-cum-shot eluded defenders and goalkeeper Cameron Anderson to find its way into the bottom corner.

After starting slowly Athletic started to get a foothold in the match and the home side deservedly equalised on 11 minutes when Walmsley raced clear on the right to fire into the bottom corner for his first of the game.

On 15 minutes Athletic grabbed the lead when Kane Randerson Wray beat his man and crossed to the far post where Dan Simpson neatly fed Walmsley, who bundled in his and Athletic’s second from close range.

Walmsley completed his hat-trick on 20 minutes finishing neatly after being fed with a slide-rule pass from Tom Wright.

Athletic were enjoying their best period of the match with Brad Smith controlling things in the middle and Walmsley added a fourth shortly after.

Hessle pulled one back just before the break to make the half-time score 4-2 to Athletic.

Two goals in a minute for Athletic 10 minutes after the interval effectively made the points safe.

Firstly the unfortunate Hessle keeper was on the end of a horrendous bobble, completely missing the ball when attempting to clear his lines, allowing Walmsley to tap into an empty net and then Randerson Wray, who was having his best game of the season so far, waltzed through a couple of challenges and slotted neatly into the corner for a great solo goal.

Athletic had one or two scares afterwards, but Anderson in goal and a back four of Lewis McGrath, Jake Baldwin, Harry Coldbeck and Zameze Deans dealt with them confidently.

Hessle completed the scoring with their third goal as the full-time whistle approached to round things off at 6-3 to Athletic for three well-deserved league points.
