The 23-year-old Gateshead man has been nothing but impressed since coming into the club on loan under former boss John Deacey, but admits he found it difficult at first.

“It’s been great,” said Thomson.

“The first couple of weeks it was a case of getting to know everyone and how they play, and obviously it was tough at first as the side were on a bad run.

“The new gaffer (Darren Kelly) has been great since coming in, he rang me and we had a good chat and he’s given me a lot of confidence to get in the final third and try to score some goals for the team.”

Thomson notched the winner in the derby against Whitby Town two weeks ago before popping up to seal a dramatic 3-2 win for Boro at Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday.

“It was great to score the winner in the derby match against Whitby, it was a fantastic feeling,” added the former Blackburn Rovers and Halifax Town man.

“Then to go and get the winner so late on at Gainsborough just added to that - I was buzzing.”

Thomson is keen to impress at Boro in order to win a new contract with Gateshead, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

Whether that means staying with Athletic beyond his deal which expires on January 18 or returning to Gateshead is yet to be decided.

“I’m enjoying my time with the club, they’ve been first class with me from the moment I arrived and the support has been superb too,” added Thomson.

“The fans have been great, I wasn’t expecting them to be as loud as they have been.

“When Scarborough came in for me I spoke to Tom White and he said how fantastic the fans were with him and how they still Tweet him now, and they’ve lived up to that.”
