RUDY FUNK: Ben’s effort highlights need for strong squad

Our superb 4-0 win at Brighouse Town on Bank Holiday Monday really highlighted the importance of having a strong squad.

We have started the season very strongly, and no better example of that is the form of Jimmy Beadle.

He has scored goals and impressed in midfield.

His suspension and the slight injury to Chris Bolder gave an opportunity to James Bennett and Pete Davidson to come into the midfield for the game at Brighouse, and what a brilliant job they both did.

I have to say, James is one of the most brilliant footballers I have ever worked with.

For a few reasons he left the club last season, but when I asked him to come back he was absolutely delighted and he was excellent on Monday.

I’ve always said it is important to have a strong squad, but you still need all those players singing from the same hymn sheet.

The mood and atmosphere in the dressing room is excellent and there is no jealousy from the players who are sat on the bench.

All the players are pushing each other for every game and that is showing on and off the pitch.

Jimmy and Chris won’t be expecting to walk back into the side now and that will drive them both on.

Another player who is impressing after getting his chance is young Ben Middleton, who kept Paul Foot on the bench on Monday.

The players know the shirt comes first, not the individuals, which is the way it needs to be.
