The game came too soon for skipper Michael Coulson, but Josh Barrett passed a fitness test after suffering with a dead leg during the week, while new signing Donald Chimalilo took up a place on the bench after signing for the club on Friday.

Manager Darren Kelly and coach David Brown were also absent from the sidelines for the travelling Athletic.

After a goalless first half the hosts took the lead when a through-ball found Scott Bakkor, who slid the ball under Ryan Whitley in the Boro goal.

Boro tried to battle back into the contest, first Neal Bishop hitting a left-footed volley just wide of the post before Ryan Watson was denied by Chris Renshaw in the Witton goal.

Sub Ryan Blott was then teed up by fellow sub James Cadman, but his effort on goal was blocked by a Witton defender.

With time running out for the visitors, Bailey Gooda guided a header towards goal, but Renshaw kept it out with ease.

Then two minutes into stoppage time Boro tried to scramble home a crucial equaliser, but Blott's effort flew wide of the target.

Boro were still pressing for a way back into the game and thought they had a good shout for a penalty late on, but the referee waved away their claims and they came away empty handed.

Kelly's men will be hoping to bounce back when they travel to big spending Buxton on Tuesday night.
