Scarborough Athletic pay the penalty as they slump to 5-0 defeat at Buxton
Scarborough Athletic slipped to a 5-0 defeat on the road at Buxton, conceding two penalties during a miserable encounter on the road.
Darren Kelly's named an unchanged starting 11 for the clash at the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium, with Chris Dawson returning to the bench after a knock.
Both sides had half-chances in the opening exchanges, Boro's coming when Ryan Watson drifted in a dangerous ball and Isaac Assenso guided his header just wide.
Diego De Girolamo was causing problems for Boro and after beating Josh Barrett in the 35th minute, he fired goalwards but Tommy Taylor was on hand to deny him the opener.
De Girolamo got in behind the Boro defence moments later and after he was dragged down by Taylor, Liam Hardy fired the resulting penalty high into the back of the Athletic net.
Buxton doubled their lead just six minutes into the second half, De Girolamo again winning the spot-kick for Hardy to again fire in from the spot.
Danger man Di Girolamo was at it again 10 minutes later, wriggling free of several Boro markers before slotting past Taylor to make it 3-0 and put the result beyond any doubt for the hosts.
On 73 minutes Di Girolamo got the better of the Boro rearguard again, holding the ball up before turning and lashing in for 4-0 and Boro's miserable afternoon went from bad to worse in the 82nd minute, Buxton turning defence into attack before Tom Elliott curled in a fifth and final goal for the hosts.
Athletic will be aiming to bounce straight back when they host Morpeth at the Flamingo Land Stadium on Boxing Day.
