The social club and sports fields on Seaton Crescent are due to go under the hammer in a property auction held by Pugh next Wednesday (April 28).
The 3.5-acre site has been given a guide price of £85,000.
But Gary Sivills, representing the sports association, is hoping a deal can go ahead before then.
“We as a sports community are doing everything we can to ensure the club stays as a sports facility and is taken over as an individual or company that are local and in favour of sports,” he told the Gazette.
“We are encouraging the owners to do the right thing and give us a chance to buy this back.”
Mr Sivills said the sports association had the backing of Scarborough Borough Council and Sport England, as well as Scarborough & Whitby MP Robert Goodwill
He said there are covenants on the land which could put developers off building on the site.
“We want to retain sport for the local community,” added Mr Sivills.
“That is the sports association’s object.
“It provides a brilliant hub for juniors and adults.”
Auctioneers say the site – home of Staithes Athletic football club – may be suitable for development, subject to planning consent being granted.
The auction will provisionally be held online next Wednesday, with registration closing on Monday (April 26) and bidding opening the day after.
