The event will take place on Monday February 27, from 6.30pm.

Matt Hewison, Scarborough Borough Council's Sport Development Officer, who organises the event on behalf of the Sports Council said: "we have received a good amount of nominations for the event and each category is really competitive.

"The standard of nomination is again very high and you don’t fully realise the true level of sporting achievement across the Borough until you start putting the presentation together”.

The Sports Awards were first introduced in the early 1980s with just five categories and have evolved to now have 19 categories that recognise all aspects of sports delivery from individuals, teams, coaches, volunteers, sports teachers, inclusive sport and for long service.

The event this year is sponsored by leisure provider Everyone Active and will also be attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of the Borough of Scarborough and David Watson, the Executive Director of North Yorkshire Sport.

The guest presenter of the awards is former Great Britain Commonwealth and Olympic Games swimmer Chris Cook, who will also give a talk about his sporting journey, benefits and achievements.

The event will start with a dance display by students from Scarborough 6th Form College

Hewison added: “The event is a real opportunity to celebrate and recognise local sporting achievement and we would encourage anyone who wishes to attend to do so, as they will be pleasantly surprised at how much is achieved by people and teams across the Borough.

"The event is free to attend and it’s great that we have someone like Chris attending this year has he will inspire a lot of the young people attending to continue participating and striving in sport."
