Sunday League: Traf fight back to beat Newlands

Trafalgar came from behind to claim a 3-2 Kenward Cup victory over old rivals Newlands Park.

Jacob Codling, scorer of a triple hat-trick last weekend, continued his fine form in front of goal when he opened the scoring to hand Park the lead.

And the visitors’ advantage was doubled when Drew McCoubrey’s cross sailed over the head of stand-in Traf keeper Liam Salt’s head.

The home side pulled a goal back after the interval, Danny Price prodding home following a goalmouth scramble, and it was 2-2 when Liam Exley set up Sean Exley to nod in.

With just 10 minutes to go, Neil Thomas picked out Billy Logan who headed past Newlands stopper Callum Myers, sealing the turnaround and his side’s place in the next round.

Second division Trafalgar Reserves will also take their place in the competitions’s last four after a 5-3 success against top flight Heslerton.

Dane Ramos’ 30-yard free-kick gave Mike Barker’s side the lead before Martyn Ferrey saw red for two yellow-card offences.

Undeterred, the 10 men took a 3-0 lead into half-time courtesy of strikes from Al Wray and Curtis Rose.

Rose and Luke Jones then struck to end the game as a contest at 5-0, but Heslerton rallied in the last 20 minutes and managed to pull three goals back.

Tom Peel netted the villagers’ first before Josh Beach unleashed a screamer for 5-2.

Billy Bown then converted a hotly-disputed penalty to cut the deficit to two goals, but that was as good as it got for Dean Storry’s side as Traf saw the game out.

West Pier saw off the challenge of fellow Division One outfit Commercial.

Sam Hyde put Pier 1-0 up but Adrain Kwiatowski pulled the away side level.

Jamie Bradshaw moved the hosts back into the lead before the break, and Danny Jones’ penalty took the score to 3-1 early in the second period.

A couple of own goals ended Commercial’s hopes of progressing and a powerful header by man of the match Jones from Bradshaw’s cross made it 6-1.

Mat Matla hit a late consolation for Geoff Osguthorpe’s charges, who played most of the second half with just 10 men and had Max Edwards in fine form.

Gary Hepples’ hat-trick helped second division Roscoes Bar to a 6-4 triumph at Scarborough Campus.

The former Scarborough Athletic man was joined on the scoresheet by brother Carl, Graeme Farrah and Tom Allen.

Dan Holden scored the university team’s first goal, before Michael Stables struck a brace - the second of which was came direct from a corner - and George Thompson netted the fourth.

Central midfielder Stables was named Campus’ man of the match.

In the Trophy Trader League trophy, Cayton Corinthians claimed a 5-0 win at Alma.

Danny Collins notched a brace, with Harry Holden, Jon Hodgson and Harry Sleep also finding the target.

The day’s only Division One fixture saw Fylingdales hammer struggling Barrowcliff 14-1.

Paul Watson led the way for the village side, going one better than last week’s hat-trick against Heslerton by grabbing four goals for the village side.

Lewis Peel and Callum Ogden both weighed in with trebles, while Sam Richardson, Jake Faichney, Ryan Cook and Jamie Wassall also got their names on the scoresheet.

Ayton maintained their second division promotion ambitions with a 6-2 win at Crown Tavern.

Kyle Ireland’s goal gave Tavern a 1-0 half-time advantage, but Mark Plumpton’s team took control after the break, netting six times.

James Reddish levelled things up before the village side’s man of the match Kieran Friett bagged a hat-trick and Niall Prentice added a brace.

Dave Barber registered a second for the home side, for whom Jake Stone was had an impressive game.

Elsewhere in the division, Ryan Link, Tom Sutherland and Liam Mintoff all hit the back of the net for Newlands Reserves as they claimed a 3-1 home success over Fylingdales Reserves.
