Trafalgar and Angel join holders Newlands in North Riding Sunday Cup quarters

Three Scarborough & District Sunday League sides progressed into the quarter-finals of the North Riding Sunday Challenge Cup.

Trafalgar beat Yarm Albion 3-1 to move into the last eight of the competition.

A brace from Sean Exley and a Jamie Patterson striker sealed Traf’s progress, with Yarm hitting back via a penalty given away by Sam Pickard.

Mikey Barker’s side were also reduced to 10 men after Kieran Link was sent off.

Goalscorer Patterson was named as Traf’s man of the match, but Barker was impressed by Liam Love, Tom Greenwood and Josh Fergus, who all shone after coming off the bench for the victors.

Trafalgar will host Yarm Town in the quarter-finals of the competition on Sunday April 18.

Also progressing into the last eight of the competition are Dan Jones’ Angel Athletic side.

Athletic edged out an impressive Redcar Athletic Under-23s outfit by a 1-0 scoreline.

A tight affair was decided by a 70th minute winner from Danny Anderson, who slotted in after good work in the build up from Kurtis Henderson, who squared the ball for the former to find the back of the net.

Jones singled out defender Harry Holden as his side’s man of the match after a solid display for the victors.

Angel Athletic have been drawn at home against Thornaby Roundel in the quarter-finals of the competition, with the tie to be played on Sunday April 18.

Competition holders Newlands Park had already sealed their spot in the quarter-finals after they edged out local rivals Valley 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw back in December 2020.

Dan Sheader’s side will be on home soil against Normanby Hall CC, with the tie to be played on Sunday April 18.
