A man has been arrested folllowing an alleged attack on a referee in last night's Scarborough Saturday League Trophy final.

The match between Goalsports and Eastway Sports at Pickering Town's Mill Lane Ground was abandoned with eight minutes remaining with Goalsports leading 2-1.

A man ran on the pitch and barged into the referee, who needed to be stretchered off and was put into a waiting ambulance.

Goalsports were awarded the trophy with Eastway having been reduced to eight-men during the match.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "We were called at about 9pm on Wednesday 29 March to a report that a man in his 60s had been assaulted during a football match in Pickering.

"Officers attended the scene, and at 11.50pm the same day, a 23-year-old man was arrested at a property in Eastfield on suspicion of wounding with intent. He remains in custody at this time.

"The victim required hospital treatment for a shoulder injury."
