West Riding win at Ayton to set up promotion decider

West Riding’s 4-2 win at Ayton has set up a Scarborough News Sunday League division two promotion decider with Heslerton next weekend, while Itis Itis boosted their chances of escaping relegation from division one with a 3-2 home win against Klosters.

The visitors played the first 30 minutes with only 10 men until Jack Ramos arrived, but on the stroke of half-time they managed to take the lead, Mark Wade’s shot was spilt by Ayton keeper Alex Glass and Curtis Rose used his knee to force the ball home from close range.

Tyson Stubbings and Kieran Friett had both spurned great one-on-one chances in the first half for Ayton.

Early in the second half Glass once again failed to hold onto a West Riding shot, this time Jack Ramos taking the ball down well and firing at goal, Rose slotting in his second from close range after Glass’ spill.

Dan Pickard pulled a goal back for the home side with a clever lob over stand-in keeper Luke Jones, but the two-goal lead was restored soon afterwards when great play from Chris Cass down the left wing saw him play the ball to Aidan McCallion, who fired his shot into the roof of the net.

A great through-ball from Rose then found James Burrows who beat the keeper and tapped in.

Good play from Brad Parkin and Pickard then set up Niall Prentice to score a second goal 10 minutes from time.

Parkin was named as the man of the match for the hosts by his boss Mark Plumpton.

West Riding chief James Prethero was unable to be at the game as he was heading to Wembley for Liverpool’s FA Cup semi-final, but he spoke of his pride at the team’s victory and is now looking forward to the promotion decider at hoome to second-placed Heslerton on Sunday,

The villagers only need a draw as they are a point ahead of Prethero’s team, so the scene is set for a cracking match next weekend.

Fylingdales Reserves earned a 3-2 home win against Roscoes Bar.

Mohamed Alimjdob gave the villagers the lead, but after the break Dave Pickard, who usually plays in goal, levelled with a cracking shot with the outside of his boot.

Sixteen-year-old Ben Thompson latched onto a long through-ball to restore Fylingdales’ lead, but soon after Pickard made it 2-2 from the penalty spot.

Dave Welham hit the winner five minutes from time for the home side, with a cracking long-range strike.

Pickard was the star man for Roscoes.

Itis Itis took a step closer to beating relegation from division one with a 3-2 home win against Klosters.

Liam Vasey fired the visitors in front from a free-kick, but Itis Itis levelled a minute before the break when Rob Dixon headed over the keeper after a long throw.

Elliot Spurr’s fine run and neat finish put the hosts in front after the break and they made it 3-1 when Thomas Mackenzie-Fenwick’s 20-yard shot sailed into the net.

Vasey struck again in the 80th minute to give Klosters hope, but the home side hung on for a crucial win.

Harry Sleep was named as the victors’ man of the match for a strong display on the wing.
