Hague qualified for the matchplay stages at Ganton after finishing joint 19th in the strokeplay competition on Monday and Tuesday.

The Malton golfer carded a gritty four-over-par 75 on a challenging Ganton course on Monday and then followed it up with a fine two-under-par 70 at South Cliff the following day to earn his place in the final 64 of the championships.

Hague's round at Ganton had got off to a worrying start as he had a double bogey at the opening hole and a bogey at the second, but he swiftly repaired some of the damage with a birdie at the third, and an eagle three at the ninth completed a level front nine of 36, with five bogies and a birdie at the 14th seeing him finish four-over.

At South Cliff Hague birdied the second and fifth, followed by bogeys at the sixth and 11th, but further birdies at the 12th, 13th, 16th and 18th holes capped a cracking round, in spite of further bogeys at 15 and 17.

On Wednesday Hague took on fellow Yorkshireman Oliver White, from Pannal GC, and claimed a superb 2 & 1 success to move onto the last 32 where he met Isle of Man ace Gandy.

The last 16 will battle it out this afternoon, with the quarter-finals and semi-finals tomorrow and the final on Saturday.
