New club set up for ‘serious’ swimmers

Award-winning local coach Juan Carlos Lino has left the Scarborough-based Kingfishers to set up the Yorkshire Coast Swimming Club, which will train in Bridlington and at The Bay complex in Filey.

He is aiming to work with young swimmers who want to push themselves to reach the highest level they can in the pool, as well as holding sessions for triathletes

Insisting his club is for those who take their sport seriously, Lino said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Kingfishers and achieved what I realistically could do at the club, although now is the time to move on from an essentially socially-orientated and leisure style club to a more professional and fully-focused approach to the sport.”

Incorporating pool-based training, devoted land training programmes and specialist swim camps, the new club will work with swimmers aged from seven upwards and will hold several sessions each week.

“As always, my main goal as a coach is to keep swimmers motivated and training hard but ultimately enjoying their swimming,” added Lino.

“Through this strategy, swimmers will continue to train happily and hopefully remain in the sport for the long term rather than commonly quitting in their early teenage years - resulting in a much greater chance of positive results in their swimming.”

Having previously achieved success with swimmers gaining medals in county, regional and national championships, the coach is now looking to better these accolades and raise the profile of the club far and wide.

“Beginning with the junior Yorkshire Championships in Sheffield in October and then on to the European Masters Championships in London in May 2016, this is going to be a really exciting first year for the Yorkshire Coast Swimming Club and its growing numbers of swimmers.

“Setting up this new club has involved a lot of hard work and effort, and there is obviously still a great deal more to do, but I really need to express my sincere gratitude to all the supportive families and swimmers who have helped me here so far, and of course a big thanks to the other coaches and teachers who have joined me at the club.

“We are steadily getting ourselves organised and have already managed to secure some sponsorship to help with club kit and equipment, so things are already looking extremely positive.
