Alan Landers defeats Cliff clubmate Adam Chilvers in Dukes Park final
Despite the heavy rain on Saturday, the singles merit at Dukes Park went ahead on a fine, generally sunny, but distinctly chilly, Sunday.
The first round opened with an all-North Cliff game, Adam Chilvers winning 21-10 against David Hill to face Sue Purcell (Whitby) who won a hard fought game against Mo Chambers (Castleford) 21-18.

Peter McCrory (Whitby) also had a tight game against home bowler Geoff Price but eventually went down 21-17 but another Dukes Park bowler, Kevin Gates lost by the same score against Dave Knights (Sheffield).
David Muir (Eastfield) beat Larry Dixon (Westgate) 21-19 to face another home bowler, Denise Dobson, who cruised through 21-9 against Mel Dale (Bridlington Bay).

Chris Dobson (Dukes Park) crushed Mally Kay (North Cliff) 21-7 while Alan Landers (North Cliff) was almost as ruthless in winning 21-10 against Ashley Brunton-Douglas (Eastfield). Paul Morgan (Whitby) won 21-11 against Brian Dalby (Borough) while Scott Wardman (North Cliff) had a fine 21-18 win against Geoff Watson (Whitby). Wardman’s clubmate Robert Child had a 21-10 win against Derek Dale (Brid Bay) while Stuart Thompson (Pontefract) won 21-11 against Ronnie Noble (Borough). Andrew Walker (Brid Bay) gained revenge for losing to Ian Richardson (North Cliff) on his home green by winning 21-17 while Tony Chambers (Castleford) disposed of Judith Andrews (North Cliff) 21-12.
In the second round Alan Lee (North Cliff) won 21-16 against Tim Purcell (Whitby) while his clubmate Chilvers won 21-14 against Sue Purcell. Price defeated Knights 21-18 to face Denise Dobson who won 21-12 against Muir.
Landers was pushed by Chris Dobson but held on to win 21-18 while Wardman lost 21-10 to Morgan. Child had a very good, 21-15, win against Thompson while Walker went out 21-14 to Tony Chambers.
The first two quarter-finals were both club clashes with Chilvers winning 21-13 against Lee and Price just getting through, 21-20, against Denise Dobson. Landers had a surprisingly comfortable 21-13 win against Morgan while Tony Chambers had a very comfortable 21-9 win against Child.
The semi-finals were both close, Chilvers beating Price 21-19 and Landers ending Tony Chambers’ run 21-16.
The all-Cliff final saw Landers take an early lead of 8-2 after 8 ends before Chilvers pulled back to 12-6 down after 14 ends.
Landers then scored 5 in the next 3 ends to lead 17-6 only for Chilvers to respond with 5 in 3 ends for a score of 17-11.
The next 4 ends were shared with singles being scored before a 3 on the 25th end sealed the 21-13 win for Landers.
There were 16 entrants for the T&B.
Brian Dalby & Mo Chambers won 21-12 against Mally Kay & David Hill and in the second Larry Dixon & Malcolm Naylor (North Cliff) beat Mel Dale & Kevin Gates 21-10.
Tim Purcell & Peter McCrory won 21-11 against Judith Andrews & Ronnie Noble for a game against Derek Dale & Alan Green (Dukes Park) who pulled off a somewhat surprising win, 21-15, against Ashley Brunton-Douglas & Ian Richardson.
Dixon & Naylor won the first semi against Dalby & Mo Chambers 21-17 while Tim Purcell & McCrory had a slightly easier time winning 21-12 against Derek Dale & Green.
The final swung both ways with Tim Purcell & McCrory opening up a 12-7 lead after 4 ends only for Dixon & Naylor to level matters at 12-12 after 9 ends.
After that the Whitby duo took the game by the scruff of the neck to win 21-14.
There is, weather permitting, an Over-60s singles merit next Friday at Whitby and, again weather permitting, Borough will be hosting an Open Singles on Sunday.
As usual entry for both is on the day with the draws being made at 9am. There will also be Drawn Pairs T&Bs for first game losers and “late arrivals” provided the weather and light permit. To ensure entry for this it is advisable to arrive no later than 11 am.
