Danby Hockey Club Ladies 2s see off Durham City 4s

Danby Hockey Club Ladies 2s produced a composed and disciplined performance to take a 2-0 victory on Saturday against Durham City 4s, who opted for an unusual tactical approach by fielding 11 outfield players and no goalkeeper.

The decision created an open, fast-paced match, Danby managed to open the scoring early on with Laura-Anderson Cornforth punishing Durham’s open goal.

From then, Durham defended well without a keeper, making a few vital saves off the line, to keep the game 1-0 at half-time.

Player of the Match Ellie Maud, operating at left-half, was exceptional throughout. Her work-rate, interceptions, and link-up play down the left side repeatedly drove Danby forward and disrupted Durham’s attempts to overload the midfield.

At the back, Ellie Jackson-Fishpool and Hettie Cook were calm and resolute.

Their positioning and composure under pressure prevented Durham from making their extra outfield player count, shutting down breaks and recycling possession intelligently.

Danby’s centre midfield pairing of Chloe Walker and Chloe Sisson dictated the tempo from the centre of the pitch. Their control, distribution, and ability to break through Durham’s lines ensured Danby kept momentum and territory for long spells of the game.

Lauren Tindall closed the game late in the second half with a lovely strike into the bottom corner.

Whitby Hockey Club Ladies produced a spirited and determined performance at a strong Durham City 1s.

Whitby showed great organisation and resilience, working hard off the ball and staying compact to limit Durham’s opportunities.

For the majority of the first half, this approach paid off. Whitby defended with discipline, closing down space quickly and making several crucial interceptions to frustrate the visitors.

As the clock ticked towards half-time, Whitby looked set to go into the break level.

However, Durham managed to break the deadlock in the final moments of the half, and with Whitby still regrouping, Durham added a second.

Despite the setback, Whitby’s effort and focus throughout the first 45 minutes were clear to see.

The second half presented an even tougher challenge. City, buoyed by their late first-half goals, grew in confidence and applied sustained pressure.

Whitby continued to battle, putting in strong tackles, tracking runners, and trying to push forward when opportunities arose.

However, Durham’s quick passing and movement eventually took its toll as they added four more goals.

While the 6-0 result was a difficult one, the team showed real character throughout. Many players put in hard-working performances, a standout performance came from Izzy Emerson, who was immense in defence, she read the game superbly, made numerous crucial tackles and clearances, and remained composed under pressure.
