Dave Perrett crowned as Whitby Sea Anglers Association League champion
David Perrett has been crowned as the champion of the Whitby Sea Anglers Association League.
Wednesday night’s three-hour match was brutal. Low pressure in charge, centred east of Iceland, 2°C,

NWesterly winds stronger than forecast estimated gusting 40mph+, (with wind chill -2°C). A growing sea, on the flood, never conducive for a good night’s fishing. By top of tide swells were topping 10ft, with surging, some fresh weed in the surf just to add to the misery as the night got worse.
At sea, an inky black weather front looking South towards Scarborough lit up occasionally with lightning flashes.
By 8pm the first hail shower, followed with larger hail and torrential rain, at 9pm another, heavier hail shower, with ice pellets the size of peas.
Of 10 seniors fishing only two had a weigh-in.
Man of the Match was Dave Ward, Guisborough, 5 codlings 6lb 5oz, who also took Heaviest Fish at 1lb 8½oz. Perrett, Whitby, had two bleggs, the best weighed 1lb 7½oz.
Sunday saw the last match of the season and the weather had one last chance to spoil an already poor season.
Fishing down to low water 9.04pm, 1.34m ebb, a chance to fish the gullies and tangle beds, and possible make-up or maintain a deficit.
However, with 51mph WNWesterly winds and crystal-clear waters it was not going to be easy!
At the scales, just five of the nine had a weigh-in - 3 flounders, 2 codlings. 1 whitings and a billet.
Man of the Match was Davey Turnbull, Darlington, with both Heaviest Bag of Fish, 4lb 8½oz (2 codlings), and Heaviest Fish, 2lb 5oz, making five and eight wins in each respectively.
Perrett was crowned this season’s champ, as was Roman Chadwick for the Junior section - congratulations to both. Roman has fished extremely well, mixing with the seniors, came 14th overall.
March’s Catch: 108 fish - 82 whiting, 11 codling, 5 blegg, 3 billet, 3 flounder, 3 rockling, and 1 LSD - 81lb 8oz - Av 12oz.
Compared to last season WSAA weighed-in 65lb more and 397 more assorted fish, predominantly whiting, at 443 compared to just 25 whiting last season!
Very few real cod-seas, too many scratching matches, hence the increase in whiting caught, as anglers must fish for what’s in-front of them to be competitive.
Monthly Sweeps: HBoFish - Dave Perrett - Sun 1st March - 13lb 2½oz (20), HFish - Dave Ward - Sun 1st - 5lb 9oz.
Season’s total catch: 1,082 lb 11oz - 1,045 assorted fish - Av 1lb 1oz. 443 whiting, 375 codling, 100 rockling, 61 blegg, 27 billet, 10 dab, 9 flounder, 11 LSD, 7 haddock, 1 wrasse, and 1 mackerel.
