Mike Carter homes in on opening-day victory at Eastfield

This week was dominated by the Eastfield Festival, five days of bowling with different formats on each day.

The entry was slightly lower than hoped for but still good with around 40 bowlers competing on the different days with some only entering on individual days.

Monday was a warm sunny say for a “Singles in Sets” competition.

In this the two players play two sets, each of 11 ends.

If a player wins both sets or wins one and draws the other they go through. If the sets are shared there is a 3 end tie-break decided on the number of ends won rather than points scored.

Also after first games, which are usually played to the full 11 ends in both sets, a set is terminated when it is impossible for a player to win that set.

There were 42 entrants and, possibly because of the different format, there were a number of surprise results.

In the preliminary round Paul Morgan (North Cliff) won 1.5-0.5 against Ian Hadden (Whitby) to face Shaughan Temple (Borough) who beat David Wright (Bridlington Bay) 2-0.

The first surprise came when John Burton (Eastfield) beat Andy Webb (Alverthorpe 2-1 in a tie-break to face Kevin Gates (Dukes Park) who won 2-0 against Caroline Watson (Borough).

Another home bowler, Eileen Greenwood, beat young bowler Leela from North Cliff 2-0 to face another North Cliffer, Adam Chilvers, who won 2-0 against Mo Chambers (Castleford).

Mark Harrap (Pontefract) won 2-0 against Ashley Brunton-Douglas (Eastfield) while Andrew Walker (Bridlington Bay) sprang a surprise winning 1.5-0.5 against Jo Leeman (Whitby).

Robert Child won 2-1 against Barrie Watson (Borough) and Albert Beggs (Brid Bay) providing the third upset of the round winning 2-0 against Chris Dobson (Dukes Park).

In the first round Gary Thornton (Borough) had a 2-1 win against Tony Chambers (Castleford) and Stuart Thompson (Pontefract) beat Allison Roe (North Cliff) 1.5-0.5.

Alan Landers (North Cliff) won 2-0 against Jim Barr (Borough) for a game against clubmate Callum Malone who beat Ian Richardson (Robin Hoods Bay) 1.5-0.5.

Mally Kay (North Cliff) went through 2-1 against Lill Barr (Borough) as did Katie Gates (Dukes Park) against Tony Bland (Borough).

Home bowler Mike Carter put Denise Dobson (Dukes Park) out 2-1 while Sue Holdsworth (Hunmanby) who won a very close game 2-0 against David Muir (Eastfield).

In the bottom half of the draw Geoff Watson (Whitby) beat Tony Bland (Borough) 2-0 for a game against Larry Dixon (Westgate) who won 1.5-0.5 against Connor from North Cliff.

Colin Anderson (North Cliff) sprang another surprise, beating Billy Holdsworth (Hunmanby) 2-0 for a game against Morgan who eliminated Temple 2-0.

Kevin Gates ended Burton’s hope winning 2-0 while Chilvers beat Greenwood 1.5-0.5. Harrap beat Walker 2-1 and Child was too strong for Beggs winning 2-0.

Thompson had a 2-0 win against Thornton in the second round to face Malone who won the all-Cliff clash against Landers 2-1.

The next two games were also 2-0 wins for Katie Gates against Kay and Carter over Sue Holdsworth.

Geoff Watson ended Dixon’s hopes 2-0 and Morgan put paid to Anderson, also 2-0. Chilvers won 2-0 against Kevin Gates to face Child who won 2-0 against Harrap

In the first quarter-final Thompson beat Malone 2-0 to face Carter who also won 2-0 against Katie Gates.

Geoff Watson beat Morgan 2-0 and Child won by the same margin against Chilvers.

Carter made the final with a 2-0 win against Thompson to face Child who made it through 1.5-0.5 against Watson.

The first set of the final was a very tight affair with Child going into a 6-2 lead after 5 ends only for Carter to win 5 of the 6 remaining ends for a 9-7 win.

The second set was a total rout as Carter won 7 ends for a 9-0 win.

Tuesday was another fine, if slightly cooler, day for a Drawn Triples.

With 39 entrants there were 13 teams split into three groups of 3 and one group of 4. In each group each team played the other two, the losing team in the first game in the groups of 3 playing the third team to avoid “dead” games. The top team in each group then went on the semi-finals.

Un the first semi-final Team 3 beat Team 6 15-9 while Team 9 had a big 21-7 win against Team 13. The final was rather one-sided with Team 13 winning 11-3.
