North Cliff duo Callum Malone and Adam Chilvers win Eastfield Doubles
The Doubles Merit at Eastfield on Sunday December 14 saw a couple of very light showers in the afternoon, but it was still cold.
The first round saw David Knights (Sheffield) & David Muir take the best part of 90 minutes to win 21-20 against Bernard Chalk & Mary Kenworthy having been 20-11 down.

Their “reward” was a game against Ellis Owen (Swillington) & Darryl Harrap (Castleford) who had a 21-13 win against Whitby’s father and son pairing of Emmo & Josh Emmerson. Tim Purcell & Gary Thornton won 21-10 against Phil Todd (Hunmanby) & Ray Leeman (Whitby) as did Chris & Denise Dobson (Dukes Park), but 21-9, against Ian & Peter Harland (both Whitby).
Mo & Tony Chambers (both Castleford) also won comfortably, 21-14, against Sue Purcell & Allison Roe (North Cliff) to face Cliff pair Alan Lee & Dave Moment who went through 21-8 against mother and daughter pair Debra & Alix Stallard (both Hunmanby).
The next game was another marathon affair with Stuart Thompson (Pontefract) & Andy Webb (Alverthorpe) just getting the better of Geoff Watson and Whitby clubmate Jo Leeman by 21-19 to face the winners of a game where Joyce Harland & Tommy Roberts won 21-11 against Peter McCrory (Whitby) & Derek Dale (Bridlington Bay).
Borough’s Simon Walker & Ronnie Noble won 21-10 against Whitby’s Kenny Rodgers & Geoff Coleman and this was the also the score when Alan Landers & Ian Richardson beat David Wicks (Eastfield) & Mel Dale (Brid Bay).
Whitby’s Sue Emmerson & Kenny Wale won 11 against Borough’s Brian Dalby & Sue Wilkinson to face another Borough pairing of Barrie & Caroline Watson who eliminated Eastfield pair Ashley Brunton-Douglas & Eileen Greenwood 21-14.
Scott Wardman & Mally Kay won an all-Cliff game against the two youngest players in the field, Connor & Leela Chilvers to set up another all-Cliff clash against Nigel & Justin Trotter who beat Hunmanby’s Jennie & Tony Allen 21-9.
The first game of the second round saw Cliff pair Callum Malone & Adam Chilvers cruise through against Brid Bay’s Andrew Walker & Alf Cowell 21-10 to face Owen & Harrap who won 21-12 against Knights & Muir.
Tim Purcell & Thornton won 21-16 against the Dobsons while Lee & Moment had a 21-11 win against the Chambers. Thompson & Webb won 21-15 against Joyce Harland & Roberts to face Landers & Richardson who were pressed hard by Walker & Noble before going through 21-20. The Watsons won 21-15 against Emmerson & Wale while the Trotters won one of the many all-Cliff games against Wardman & Kay 21-11.
Malone & Chilvers won the first quarter-final against Owen & Harrap 21-16 and this was also the score, when Purcell & Thornton won against Lee & Moment. Landers & Richardson had a surprisingly big 21-13 win against Thompson & Webb while the Watsons came back from 20-14 down to win 21-20.
The first semi-final was a close affair, Malone & Chilvers winning 21-18 against Purcell & Thornton while the Watsons went down 21-11 to Landers & Richardson
The all-Cliff final started evenly with the score 10-10 after six ends.
Malone & Chilvers then edged ahead to 13-11 after 10 ends before scoring seven in the next four ends to stand 20-11 up particularly due to excellent bowling from Chilvers.
Landers & Richardson pulled one back but another single was enough to give Malone & Chilvers the win.
There are no Over-60s singles merits now until 9 January at Westgate.
