Scarborough Athletic Club runners pay tribute to Sean Kelly

Scarborough Athletic Club very sadly lost one of its valued members recently as Sean Kelly lost his brave battle with lung cancer on Friday November 14.

Sean immersed himself in club life getting involved in all aspects of the club, even from his bedside at Saint Catherine’s Hospice during his final weeks.

Sean’s hill series will remain a firm favourite with club members; it was truly the training everyone loved to hate and brought the whole club together exactly as Sean had intended it.

Runners of all abilities gathered each week to undertake the hill programme.

The club remembered Sean by holding one of his Kenyan hill sessions, a continuous running workout at a steady, hard pace - a very fitting tribute.

An inspiration, Sean was always keen to support and guide others, many of whom were in awe of his running ability (he was fast). Having qualified for the world championships with his 2hr 48 marathon and sub 60 minute 10 mile times, he got to wear his England vest at his final run at North Yorkshire Water Park parkrun back in February.

Since 2009 Sean used his running to raise tens of thousands of pounds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

On December 1 runners from across Scarborough came together to run along Scarborough’s Marine Drive and raise funds for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation on day one of the charity’s 12 runs of hope, which sees people across the country running (or walking) 2k a day for 12 days during December.

Sean’s love of running will undoubtedly live on in all of its club members.
