Spirited Danby Hockey Club Ladies undone by Bay’s quick-fire double
Danby will count themselves unlucky to have suffered a 3-1 defeat in Saturday’s home match against Whitley Bay.
The opening phase of the match was a fairly cagey and tight affair with both sides feeling their way into the game.

Gradually, Danby began to exert more pressure and a foray into the Whitley circle saw Bronwyn Hodgson get a shot away, which took a deflection off a defender’s stick and into the goal.
However Danby's celebrations were cut short when, after a protest by the Whitley defenders, the umpires disallowed the goal claiming the ball had been struck outside the circle.

This brought some disbelief from Danby and the home side were still reeling from this disappointment when Whitley broke free and scored.
Danby picked themselves up, playing some lovely hockey, and the ball broke to Alice Hogarth whose sweetly timed shot buried itself into the roof of the net.
Whitley's defence held firm under pressure and the score remained 1-1 at half time.
The second half remained closely contested with fine defensive work from Christine Tarrant and Plum Sweet who linked well with the midfield through Rosie Hogarth and Claire Stringer.

Some excellent long balls from Sarah Thompson and great ball distribution throughout the squad resulted in excellent crosses and movement into the circle.
Only very good defending from Whitley saw Danby's forwards frustrated in front of goal.
However, two good breakaways saw Whitley go 3-1 up but Danby never gave up and tireless running from Lily Harland kept the Whitley defence under pressure right to the final whistle.
Danby’s excellent spirit, skill and determination deserved better rewards and no fewer than six players received votes for player of the match. Sarah Thompson, Alice Hogarth, Claire Stringer, Issy Hogarth and Chloe Orrell were pipped by winner Plum Sweet.

Whitby Ladies faced a tough challenge at a well-organised and energetic Whitley Bay side, the hosts winning by a 5-0 margin.
Bay set the tempo, pressing high and closing Whitby down quickly whenever they gained possession. This early pressure made it difficult for Whitby to settle into the game or build any rhythm, and Bay capitalised on their strong start with three well-taken goals before the half-time whistle.
Despite the scoreline, Whitby continued to work hard across the pitch, with players showing determination and commitment in defence as they tried to break up the home side’s attacking flow.
The second half brought a noticeable improvement in Whitby.

The team re-organised themselves well, communicating more effectively and showing real resilience under sustained pressure. Whitby’s back line produced some excellent blocks and clearances, and the midfield worked tirelessly to track runners and close down space. However, pushing the ball forward proved challenging, as Bay continued to dominate possession and press aggressively in transition.
Whitby did create a few promising moments on the counter-attack, but were unable to convert them into clear goal-scoring opportunities.
Eventually, Bay managed to break through twice more, securing a final score of 5-0.
Player of the Match was goalkeeper Kirsty Dixon, who delivered an exceptional performance in goal and was undoubtedly the standout player.
Throughout the match she produced a series of fantastic saves, showing bravery, sharp reactions, and great positioning.
Her highlight moment came with a superb save from a penalty flick, which lifted the team and kept the scoreline from stretching even further.
Her efforts kept Whitby competitive and demonstrated real leadership from the back.
Although the result wasn’t what Whitby hoped for, the team can take pride in their improved second-half performance and the determination shown throughout. With continued focus and teamwork, there is a strong foundation to build on for future matches.
