Wallace, who is well-known from starring as one of the ‘Chasers’ on ITV’s popular quiz show ‘The Chase’, came along to the village as the guest of honour to officially open the new outdoor table, which is located at Snainton Playing Fields.

Community volunteer Tom Farrell said: “This is the first public outdoor table in North Yorkshire and has been funded by community crowdfunding and a contribution by the Parish Council.

“I contacted Shaun Wallace (The Chaser) as I had seen him beat a robot at table tennis and much to my surprise he immediately called me to say he would do it!

“Shaun told me he was glad to support community events and he didn’t want anything in return.

“A few volunteers got together to plan the day.

“People provided cakes and helped erect gazebos and outdoor seating on the field.

“About 30 locals and a class of children from Snainton School attended the event.

“Shaun played short games with the children and the winners were presented with signed bats.

“We also had a raffle and along with the refreshments raised £172 for a “good cause.”

“Shaun signed bats and shirts and then dispatched any adults who fancied their chances at table tennis.

“He is a very grounded person for a star, and will be remembered as Snainton’s favourite Chaser.

“Anyone can come down to play for free. On cricket days bats and balls can be loaned from the pavilion.”
