Tim homes in on Over-60s win against Whitby clubmate Geoff
The weather on Friday at Whitby for the Over-60s crown green merit was bitterly cold, wet and windy.
In the preliminary round Joyce Harland (Whitby) played well in losing 21-17 to Sunday’s winner, Ian Richardson (North Cliff), while Tim Purcell (Whitby) made short work of clubmate Pete McCrory winning 21-9.

Gary Thornton (Borough) was also pressed by Mary Smith (Whitby) but won 21-15 only to come up against in-form Alan Landers (North Cliff) who crushed Ronnie Noble (Borough) 21-8.
Tommy Roberts (Whitby) just made it into the first round with a 21-20 win over James Arnold (Robin Hood’s Bay) to face Ashley Brunton-Douglas who cruised through 21-11 against Steve Dover (Whitby).
All but one of the first round games were comfortable or big wins starting with two 21-7 games where Barrie Watson (Borough) beat Mally Kay (North Cliff) to face another Watson, Geoff (Whitby) who disposed of clubmate Kenny Wale.
The one close game of the round saw Alan Lee (North Cliff) win 21-18 in a see-saw game against David Muir (Eastfield) to set up a game against Jo Leeman who destroyed Whitby clubmate Emmo Emmerson 21-4.
Keith Davis (Westgate) won 21-11 against Whitby’s Sue Purcell while Tim Purcell beat Richardson 21-13.
The quarter-final line-up was completed when Landers also won 21-13 against Thornton and Brunton-Douglas beat Roberts 21-8.
Geoff won the “Battle of the Watsons” 21-11 while Lee had a fine 21-7 win against Leeman.
Tim Purcell also had a big, 21-8, win against Davis while Landers was pressed a little more by Brunton-Douglas but went through 21-13.
This was also the score when Geoff Watson put an end to Lee’s good progress in the first semi while Tim Purcell won a close game against Landers 21-19.
The final saw Geoff Watson take an early 10-8 lead after 5 ends only for Tim Purcell to take three 2s to go 14-10 up. Watson pulled 1 back but this was answered by Purcell. Another single for Watson saw Purcell score a 2 before a 2 for Watson made it 17-14.
A single score apiece took the score to 18-15 before Purcell ran out in the next 2 ends to win 21-18.
In the T&B final Mary Smith & Pete McCrory lost 21-2 to the strong pairing of Kenny Wale & Ronnie Noble.
