Whitby’s Yorkshire boxing champion Corey Greaves eyes more success in 2026
Schoolboy Corey Greaves started fitness training at Whitby Amateur Boxing Club five years ago and was “dragged into the sport I’m now obsessed with” and this year became Yorkshire champion for his age on a Bridlington show at his under 54kg weight.
Greaves said: “I soon realised this was the sport I wanted and I showed some ability so before long I was training up to four times a week with older boys.

"There’s no history of boxing in my family but my dad qualified to be a club coach, and he’s been an enormous help. He’s in my corner every time I have a bout.”
Fifteen-year-old Whitby School Year 10 student Corey lives in Sleights with his parents and younger sister.
He added: “I train at the club three times each week and have two strength and conditioning sessions at Fitness Machine. My dad Marlon is my main coach. His support keeps me going.
"A couple of other boys joined when I did, and we’ve been boxing together now for getting on five years.
"We enjoy travelling to other clubs for sparring practice and training and this provides the opportunity to make new friends.”
Corey has now won seven fights but has also lost a few.
He said: “That’s to be expected. It’s how you improve. I’m proud to have won the Yorkshire title and I also picked up a silver medal at the Hull Box where you compete against boxers from clubs from all over the North. Like most young boxers my ambition is eventually to become a professional boxer and win a world title.
"Before that though my aim is to win a national amateur title and hopefully earn a place in the England national squad.
"My aim for 2026 is to get a gold in a box cup and at least reach national semi-finals. We’ve also got a weekend of competition in Ireland early next year.”
Corey enjoys boxing on local shows as “it’s easy for friends and family to attend and it also helps me build a fanbase for being a pro boxer later.”
he added: “I love the training and the fact that although I might feel nervous waiting to box the result largely depends on just me and how hard I’ve trained, how committed I’ve been.
"The training gives me confidence. It takes courage, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
"I admire various boxers such as Terence Crawford and Ben Whittaker but I’m also grateful to Kane Morrison who is a senior Whitby boxer. He’s helped me no end in making progress.”
Dad Marlon is his son’s biggest fan.
He said: “Boxing is good for Corey in so many ways. It’s helping him negotiate potentially difficult years in a young person’s life. He’s dedicated to the sport, and this gives his life focus.
"We are very proud of him and grateful for an activity that’s brought us together.”
Corey also said: “I would like to thank Mick Durdan and BOXAFIT for the sponsorship which has helped me get equipment and fight clothing.
"If anyone else would like to support me better and to put our town on the boxing map, please e-mail [email protected] as any help is appreciated.”
