S&DCGBA president Mick Hill presents the Boyes Cup to Gary Puleston with runner-up Kenny Wale looking on

Thirty-three players from nine clubs competed for the trophy, which was presented by Boyes and has been played for since 1923.

Previous winners competing in the competition were Andy Deighton (Dukes Park), Robert Child (North Cliff), last year’s winner Mick Gates (Borough) Alan Landers (Whitby) Phil Todd (Hunmanby) Geoff Watson (Whitby).

There were no real surprises in the first round, however last year’s winner Gates was drawn against Deighton, Gates progressing 21-18.

The quarter-finals saw two Whitby players Steve Dover and Watson playing each other, the latter winning through 21-10.

Todd, a previous winner, was beaten by Sheila Dyson (Bridlington Bay) 21-18 and Gary Puleston beating Dukes Park clubmate Gates 21-17.

The semi-finals saw Watson play clubmate Kenny Wale, who won 21-14, the other semi-final saw Puleston play Dyson, and Puleston proved to be too strong, winning by a 21-4 scoreline.

In the final Puleston carried on where he had left off and beat Wale 21-8 to seal the prestigious Boyes Cup.

Although Puleston has won the Hospital Cup and Rosebowl (these to be played for later in the year) this was the first time he has won the coverted Boyes Cup.

The presentation was made by Mick Hill, president of the S&DCGBA.

Hill thanked North Cliff and greensman Pat Germaine, the ladies of North Cliff for their efforts in supplying refreshments throughout the day, markers, measurers and the competition organiser for all their efforts in making the day run smoothly.
