Pirates skipper Dave Douthwaite and Harry Sleep were part of the White Rose side who suffered a 26-18 defeat against their Lancashire counterparts.

Douthwaite said: “I’m really proud to have played in a Roses match, it’s an honour to represent your county.

“We were all disappointed with the result but it was a great experience and we’re looking forward to a return match in Yorkshire.”

That sentiment was echoed by Pirates teammate Sleep, who played at full-back in the clash at Wigan St Patrick’s ground.

He said: “Me and Dave were discussing on the way to Wigan how upsetting it was that we had to call the Pirates campaign off a few games short this year, but it was great to be part of a Roses game against Lancashire.

“We will hammer them on Yorkshire turf in the rematch, which should be another great experience.”
