Despite suffering a 25-10 defeat at home to Sharlston Rovers in the Yorkshire Men’s League premier division, Scarborough Pirates had a day to remember, while paying tribute to one of their biggest fans.

Pirates winger Harry Sleep said: “Following the tragic death of our supporter Andrew McGeown a few locals got together and organised a fundraiser for the RNLI for the help and support towards Andrew’s family. With a gathering of nearly 200people, the “Princess Party” double-header got underway with both Pirates team hosting home fixtures on Saturday.

The A team were taking on Cutsyke Raiders and the first team were tackling high-flying Sharlston.

Sleep added: “Both teams observed a minute’s appluase, dressed in pink T-shirts sporting Andrew’s face and best friend, his dog.

“The last time the first team took on Sharlston they fell to a heavy defeat, but on this occasion with the huge support of the eager home crowd, they got off to a fantastic start with a quick Tom Jenkinson try.

“Both teams were strong with every aspect of the game, going into the first half deadlocked at 10-10.”

After the break, errors were forced as was discipline, and penalties either way were proving costly, as the Rovers struck again with a well-drilled try and then a drop goal from a long way out.

Sleep said: “Helpless to the speed of the game, and nature of Rovers’ provens strengths, the Pirates could only look on as Sharlston struck again just before the end to secure another win. The Pirates were unfortunate on this occasion, battling well until the end, showing good chances and prospects throughout. Their lack of training and game time contributing to their downfall.

“We were all humbled nonetheless by a proud home support and a respectful opponent. All in all a fantastic day of rugby between the four sides at Eastway, and raising a fantastic amount towards the RNLI.”

The winger concluded: “Thank you everyone for the support, contributions, everyone behind the scenes, including the bouncy castle, welly-wanging, face-painting and everything else in making it such a great day for all.”
