A depleted Scarborough Pirates side suffered a 42-20 defeat away at Ossett Trinity in Yorkshire Division Two.

The game was switched from the Pirates' Eastway base to Ossett's home ground, with the away side looking to close the gap on Trinity, who sit one place above Keith Paddock's side in the league table.

The Pirates travelled without a host of key players, with skipper Dave Douthwaite, player-coach Keith Paddock, Alex Paddock, Harry Sleep, Toby Welsby, Tom Jenkinson and Nathan Hakings all missing.

Scarborough's defeat came despite two tries from Jamie Cornish and efforts from Carl Stephenson and Zac Metcalfe.

Joe Messruther was the Pirates' man of the match after converting two of their tries and putting in a solid display against an impressive Trinity outfit.

Stand-in coach Alex Paddock said: "The lads did very well, the defence was outstanding and they played some very good rugby.

"Dave Byerley, who hasn't played for over a year, stepped up and worked very hard."
